2 Types of Conditional Sentences
Type 0: To express universal truth Type 1: To express present or future activities which are true or likely Type 2: To express present or future activities which are impossible or unlikely to happen Type 3: To deal with past situations Conditional Sentences 2019/2/24

3 Type 0: To express universal truth
Form: Present tense, Present tense *** The conjunction “IF” can be replaced by “WHEN” e.g. a. If we ice under the sun, it melts quickly. b. When we ice under the sun, it quickly. put put melts T Ex. Conditional Sentences 2019/2/24

4 Conditional Sentences
Type 1: To express present or future activities which are true or likely Form: Present tense, Present future tense (can / may) e.g. If it rains tomorrow, we will not go on a picnic. If it should rain tomorrow, we will not go on a picnic. OR Should it rain tomorrow, we will not go on a picnic. T Ex. Conditional Sentences 2019/2/24

5 Conditional Sentences
Type 2: To express present or future activities which are impossible or unlikely to happen Form: Past tense, Past future tense *** Use “WERE” for all persons e.g. a. If it rained tomorrow, we would not go on a picnic. b. If Peter were here, we would win. OR Were Peter here, we would win. T Ex. Conditional Sentences 2019/2/24

6 Conditional Sentences
Type 3: To deal with past situations. The action mentioned did not actually happen. Form: Past perfect tense, Past future perfect tense *** The word “IF” can be omitted but the subject and the verb should exchange position. e.g. If it had rained yesterday, we would not have gone on a picnic.
