Compactor Monitor Service
Reduce Compactor Pick ups and SAVE MONEY Hello. My name is Mike and I am the President of WasteFloNT.com. And today I’m going to talk about how our trash compactor monitoring service will enable you to reduce compactor pick ups and help you SAVE MONEY. First, I’d like to describe the industry standard regarding trash compactor servicing.

Trash Disposal Process
Can’t see inside a compactor How do you know when it’s full? Scenario #1 Pre-determined schedule 1x/week or 3x/week, etc. Scenario #2 Call-in basis Manual phone-in to hauler Forgive me for making this sound oversimplified. If you own or lease a trash compactor, you have no doubt made the right choice in the way to handle trash. Compactors contain all waste compared to an open-top container, they’re cleaner and they don’t need to be serviced as often as other dumpsters. However, one major drawback within the industry is that you can’t see inside a compactor which means that you have little choice but to guess whether the container is full. So, the trash haulers have two different ways in which they provide service. **First, the generator can request from the hauler a service schedule that keeps the compactor empty. For example, Monday/Thursday or Tuesday/Friday service would not be unreasonable. **Second, the generator can rely on an employee to call-in to the hauler when that person thinks the container is full or getting close to full. Usually, the employee looks at a pressure gauge or watches waste back up into the hopper to make that determination.

Fixed cost structure Potential for over-service Not cost effective if there is a hauling charge Scenario #2 - Call-in basis Potential for under-service or over-service Human involvement Potential Problems may arise in either case. **In the first scenario, the generator is locked into a fixed cost structure. When the hauler shows up to pull the compactor, an event has taken place that drives revenue for the waste hauler assuming a hauling charge is passed on. IN a perfect world, the compactor is stuffed full but typically the compactor box is not filled to capacity every time the hauler picks up. **In the second scenario, the generator relies on a pressure gauge or a light to “alert” a human being on the dock that the compactor is nearing a “full” threshold. However, a gauge or a light is measuring just a single compaction event. The potential for error is huge. Also, when the generator relies on a dock worker to make the call, there is always that “what if” situation. For example, it’s Friday morning and the employee doesn’t think that the compactor will make it through the weekend so he calls it in. Or, it’s Friday morning and the employee thinks the compactor WILL make it through the weekend….but by Saturday, it’s full. Here again, if a hauling charge is in place, the generator is paying for an inefficient process.

Now let’s take a look at what happens inside a garbage compactor. How do you know? The gauge says that it is, but is it really?

Let’s start with an empty compactor container. There is a certain amount of pressure needed just to push the ram into the receiver box which is what you will see here.

As more and more trash is placed into the compactor, the waste moves horizontally to the back of the container. This creates a pressure build up (or waste to appear in the hopper) and COULD cause a False Full reading. If your employee calls this in for a pick up, you are assured being over-service.

After more compactions, the waste bridges and then breaks up.
After the more waste is added to the compactor, the material bridges and rolls over onto itself creating more room. The gauge now indicates more space is available! This process often repeats itself with continual compactions.

From the graph, you can see why pressure gauges and lights do not provide the information needed to accurately determine when the compactor container is at a near full level and in need of pick-up service. What we are seeing is a gradual buildup of pressure (remember those bridging and breaking slides I just showed you?) over a three month time period. Can you see now that a pressure gauge or a light would look like a full container when the waste inside is simply rolling over onto itself?

Installation is both fast & easy
Some people ask me if they can use the system on a rented compactor and the answer is YES. The interface between the compactor and our monitor is a pressure transducer that is plumbed into the existing hydraulics using a “T” splitter. It’s very non-invasive. The patented waste monitor can be installed onto any existing compactor and digitally measures container capacity levels with 99% accuracy by processing every compaction cycle.
