1 Adaptations

2 Adaptation An adaptation is a trait that helps an organism survive in its environment and reproduce. Species must be adapted to their habitat: Individuals of a species must be able to: obtain food, keep safe, build homes, withstand weather, attract mates and reproduce.

3 Adaptations Each adaptation has been produced by evolution.
this means that the adaptations have developed over many generations through the process of natural selection.

4 Types of Adaptations Physical and behavioural adaptations make it possible for the animal to live in a particular place and in a particular way.

5 Some physical adaptations that help creatures survive:
shape of a bird's beak colour of the fur or skin the thickness or thinness of the fur the shape of the nose or ears Physical adaptations are features of an organism’s physical appearance that help it to survive

6 Bird Beaks

7 Skin/Fur colour

8 Some behavioural adaptations that help creatures survive:
Hibernation/migration Living in a group vs living solo Singing Mating rituals Behavioural adaptations are the ways in which an organism acts or the things it does that help it to survive

9 Overwintering Strategies

10 Population Distributions

11 Types of Adaptations Think back to the beaver: Physical adaptations:
broad, flat tail, thick, oily fur, webbed hind feet Behavioural adaptations: build lodges for protection from a harsh climate and dams to maintain high water levels to hide the entrance to their lodge.

12 Adaptations in conclusion
Organisms can be adapted: To climate Through how they move Through how they eat Through the way they communicate Through the way they reproduce
