3. Imagery
Definition:  to use figurative language to represent objects, actions and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our five physical senses.
Sight

4. Imagery Examples
* It was dark and dim in the forest. – The words “dark” and “dim” are visual images. * The children were screaming and shouting in the fields. – “Screaming” and “shouting” appeal to our sense of hearing. *He whiffed the aroma of brewed coffee. – “whiff” and “aroma” evoke our sense of smell. *The girl ran her hands on a soft satin fabric. – The idea of “soft” in this example appeals to our sense of touch. *The orange was juicy and sweet. – The words “ juicy” and “sweet” appeal to our sense of taste.

5. Mood
Definition – The atmosphere of a literary work because it creates an expressive setting wrapping the reader with emotions. Mood is established in order to affect the reader emotionally. Identifying the mood of a piece of writing will depend on the number of descriptive words the writer uses to convey the intended mood.

7. Details
Definition: To report or relate clearly or plainly on information that is read, heard, seen, thought, or described.
EXAMPLES:
1. His deep and soulful blue eyes were like the color of the ocean on the clearest day you can ever imagine. 
2. The soft fur of the dog felt like silk against my skin and her black coloring glistened as it absorbed the sunlight, reflecting it back as a perfect, deep, dark mirror. 

8. Theme
Definition: A main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work that may be stated directly or indirectly.
EXAMPLES:
* Identity/discovering identity can be found in The Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan.
* Conformity, bullying, loyalty, and self-esteem are themes that can be found in Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney.
* Humility can be found in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling.

9. Visual Analysis
Definition: Gathering clues embedded in works of art; searching for the underlying meaning and messages that are present in a work of art.
For Example:
* What do you see in a picture/work of art?
> People
> Clothes
> Activities
> Colors
> What do you think is going on?
> What can you predict will happen?

10. Coordinate Adjectives
Definition: adjectives that appear in sequence with one another to modify (describe) the same noun. For example, the adjectives in the phrases bright, sunny day and dark and stormy night are coordinate adjectives. Coordinate adjectives are usually separated with commas or “and” and “and” always comes before the final adjective.
EXAMPLES:
* Forecasters warned of another day of hot, windy conditions across Southern California on Sunday.
* Slippery and treacherous roads are common after a big snowfall.

Definition: A change or a set of changes that corrects or improves something as in a form of writing.
EXAMPLE: *

Definition: To work with another person or group in order to achieve or do something.
EXAMPLE:

13. Topic Sentences
Definition: Introduces the “main idea” of the paragraph, giving the paragraph purpose. Without the topic sentence, a paragraph is just a collection of ideas.
EXAMPLE: The following two slides show how to come up with a good topic sentence…

14. Here’s How It Works Come up with at least 3 supporting details.
Take out the trash.
Feed the pets.
Help wash the dishes.

15. Now We Put It All Together!
Most kids help their families with household chores. Some kids take out the trash each day. Some kids have the responsibility of feeding their pets. Many kids help wash the dishes after dinner. It is good for kids to help out with household chores.
