Women were seen as weaker than men by the church, yet many Christians revered Mary, the mother of Jesus, and even dedicated churches to her.

Monasteries and Convents
Some Medieval men and women became monks and nuns. Benedict wrote rules to regulate monastic life. Monasteries and convents offered health and educational services, as well as lodging for pilgrims. Their libraries housed Greek and Roman works, which monks and nuns copied.

Church Power Grows
Medieval popes came to claim papal supremacy over all secular rulers. The church developed its own body of laws, called canon law. It held rulers in check with the penalties of excommunication and interdiction. Often it used its power to end warfare among nobles.

Corruption and Reform
Some monks, nuns, and priests were drawn away from their devotion to the church and toward wealth, power, and family matters. Pope Gregory VII led a push for reform and limited secular influences on the church. Friars and Dominican nuns joined the pope in the reform movement.

Jews in Medieval Europe
By the late 1000s, Christian Western Europe experienced increasing Anti-Semitism, especially during times of disasters. Jews were limited in their occupations and property. Many Jews migrated to Eastern Europe, where their skills and knowledge were welcomed.
