1 Anthropometry Literally, ‘The measure of man’ What? Why?
quantifies human variability What? physical measures height, weight, reach, length, width, depth, circumference, surface area, etc. strength, dexterity, range of motion Why? Selection vs job modification fit the job to the person rather than the person to the job Exclude as few as possible

2 Anthropometry How? Populations Tools & techniques
Statistical calculations

3 Using Anthropometric Data
Refer to Table 5.1 on page 64 of your text. What is the shoulder height of the 5th percentile woman? The 95th percentile man? If you were designing a console requiring a forward reach to activate a control, what reach distance would you use to define your maximum console depth?

4 In-Class Lab 1 As a class, we will complete the following lab exercise: The class will split into 2 groups and start at either end of the marked 50 ft. course in the downstairs hall. At each end of the hall will be a designated timekeeper. Taking turns by group, each student will walk at a normal pace from one end of the course to the other. The timekeeper at the near end will signal the timekeeper at the finish when the walker starts. The ‘finish line’ timekeeper will start the stopwatch at that signal and timing will stop when the walker crosses the ‘finish line.’ Walkers: count your steps as you walk. After crossing the finish line, record the number of steps and the time as given by the timekeeper at the finish.

5 Homework (due Friday, 1/28)
Enter your data into an Excel file using the following format: your file to the listserv prior to coming to class (at the latest – earlier is preferred.) You will use the combined data from the class to complete your lab assignment.
