1 MCB Exam 3 Review Fall 2018

2 Cytoplasmic streaming
Continuous motion of the cytoplasm typically occurring in large cells Multicellular organisms (animal, plant, single cell prokaryotes) tend to be limited in size (1-100um) likely reflecting a limit on effective diffusion Current hypothesis: Streaming is a form of compensation for larger cell sizes Molecular motors (myosin-actin) along the cytoskeleton  circulation of cytoplasmic fluid Enhances nutrient transport, facilitates metabolite interactions, moves organelles e.g. chloroplasts, etc

3 Cells of the Nervous System (Mercer)
Know all the cell types presented in lecture – neurons, glia What are the different types of cells in each category? What roles do they play? Understand how signals are transferred across a neuronal synapse Chemical vs electrical Know what happens at the neuromuscular junction Understand the role of neurotransmitters Examples? What do they do? Excitatory vs inhibitory?

4 Plant Cell Biology (Dixit)
What makes plant cells different from animal cells? Cell division Membrane transporters Organelles Cytoskeleton Osmotic regulation/maintenance of cell volume Modes of intracellular transport

5 ECM and Cell-Matrix Interactions (Miner)
ECM – key proteins, function Basement membrane – key proteins, function Role of integrins - How are they activated? What do they bind? Why do we need them? Collagen vs elastin synthesis – what happens if something goes wrong? Know the diseases discussed in these lectures Collagen/elastin = extremely important and ubiquitous structural proteins

6 Prions (True)

7 Good luck!
