2 Early life Clarissa Harlow Barton was born December 25, 1821 in North, Oxford Massachusetts. Lived on a farm. Raised by four siblings. Her sisters taught her to read at the age of 3 and cook, sew and clean. Her brothers taught her to ride bareback, use tools, tie strong reliable knots and throw a ball like a boy.

3 Middle years .Age 19 offered a job full-school if she is paid as much as a man .Taught for 10 more years .Wanted all children to have education

4 Later years .Clara provided first aid, food supplies wounded soldiers for the first time. .First women granted permission to go on the battlefield. .Nicknamed “Angel of the Battlefield. When war ended she received thousands of letters asking to help find missing soldiers. .Opened an office to find Union soldiers. Traveled for two years giving lectures about the war. .Introduced to International Red Cross. .Came home and developed The American Red Cross. .Worked for American Red Cross 23 years. .Died April 12, 1912 in Glen Echo, Maryland.
