1 Mind Stretcher: 1/18/17 Write 2 examples of an ORGAN and 2 examples of ORGAN SYSTEMS… Possible Answers: Organs- heart, lungs, brain, skin, stomach, intestines, bones Organ Systems- circulatory, respiratory, nervous, integumentary, digestive…

2 Levels of Organization Notes Please write TITLE of each slide and the green notes in each box on organizer

3 ATOMS Smallest part of matter NON-living

4 Molecules 2 or more bonded atoms Form compounds NON-living

5 Macromolecule Very large complex molecules (polymers) made of a bunch of smaller molecules that are the same (monomers.) Analogy If you have a pearl necklace. The individual pearls would be the monomer and the necklace would be the polymer. All living things are made up of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids. NON-living The macromolecules are mainly made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen but in different ratios. This gives each compound different properties.

6 Ex: nucleus, mitochondria
Organelles “Tiny organs” Made of macromolecules Non-living Ex: nucleus, mitochondria

7 Ex: plant cell, skin cell…
Made of organelles Basic unit of structure & function LIVING Ex: plant cell, skin cell…

8 Ex: muscle tissue, nerve tissue
The SIMILAR cells working together Living Ex: muscle tissue, nerve tissue

9 Organs SIMILAR tissues that work together Living Ex: heart, stomach…

10 Ex: skeletal system, nervous system
Organ Systems Organs that work together for similar purpose Living Ex: skeletal system, nervous system

11 Organism Ex: human, dog Entire living things (organisms)
Usually made of systems May be a single cell Living Ex: human, dog

12 Population Same organisms living together Ex: group of penguins

13 Ex: penguins, polar bears
Community Several populations living together Populations interact Ex: penguins, polar bears

14 Ecosystem A biotic (living) community and the abiotic (nonliving) features Ex: penguins, polar bears, temperature, & sun

15 Biome Similar ecosystems on earth together Ex: arctic tundra

16 Biosphere Whole living layer on Earth Includes abiotic features

17 Tissue Organ System Organism Atom Molecule Macromolecule Organelle
Cell Tissue Organ System Organism Population Community Ecosystem Biome Biosphere

18 Summary Statement on the bottom of organizer:
Look back at the title of these notes and think about how it was organized… Write 1-2 sentences summarizing what you just learned on this page.

19 Video Clip- Levels of Organization

20 Reading Activity Read & follow directions on sheet provided
You may choose to work alone Complete visual organizer on back too! Finished? Complete the half sheet ANALOGY …this will be due tomorrow! (AC Only)

21 Think, Pair, Share: Can you put the following items in order from smallest to largest? Organ, Cell, Organ System, Tissue, Organism **Think to yourself first! Then quietly discuss with table partner…be ready for me to call on you to share!

22 Mindstretcher What are the four basic types of tissues in the human body? Briefly list what they do **Read the organizer first and then write your answer!  You may highlight/underline too! Muscle- move body parts Nerve- transmits messages Connective- provides support Epithelial- provides protective outer coating (skin)
