1 Summarize & Paraphrase
7.Fig 19E: Summarize, Paraphrase and synthesize texts in ways that maintain meaning and logical order within a text and across texts.

2 Paraphrase Put part of or all of the text into your own words.
Differs from summary because you’re not retelling just the important parts, rather all of the parts are being retold Restating all that you read You don’t have to change every word, but it should not be too similar to the original text.

3 Rules of ALL Summaries Includes the main idea (restated in your own words) and most important details Should give the information in the order it happens in the story Should NEVER include: Quotes or direct text evidence Colloquialisms (“Let me tell you about…”) Your opinion Specific details (like dates or ingredients) Not told in 1st person – you weren’t there Additional information not given to you in the text but that you may know from previous knowledge.

4 Summary Fiction Summary NON-Fiction Summary You summarize the plot
“What is the main problem?” “What were the main events?” “How do the characters solve the problem?” You can also include the theme of the story Give the author’s central message or “MAIN IDEA” Support the main idea with 2 important supporting details These are not specific details They should be general statements that sum up a couple of important things you should remember about the passage

5 Class Practice Southern states had practiced slavery since the 17th century, but in Texas, it wasn’t practiced until the 1820’s. The first slaves arrived with their owners, who settled Stephen Austin’s colony. Over 400 enslaved African Americans worked as field hands and house help. Those with specialized skills worked as blacksmiths or carpenters. Slavery continues in Texas until two months after the end of the Civil War, when federal troops entered Galveston and declared emancipation for 250,000 slaves. Write a brief summary of the paragraph. Slavery came late to Texas when settlers arrived in Stephen Austin’s colony. At the end of the Civil War African American slaves in Texas were given their right to freedom.
