1 BIOLOGY THE STUDY OF LIFE

2 The Cell Cell Theory: All living things are made of one or more cells
The cell is the basic structural & functional unit of life All cells come from other cells though the process of cells division (ex. mitosis)

3 Cells -> The Basic Unit of Life
Tissues -> a group of cells working together Organs -> a group of tissues working together Organisms -> a group of organs working together

4 Cell Types 1. Eukaryotes Animal Plants Protists Fungus 2. Prokaryotes
Archaobacteria Eubacteria Introduction to Cells: The Grand Cell Tour Amoeba Sisters 4

5 Protists: Unicellular organisms
1. Eukaryotes Protists: Unicellular organisms Have a nucleus & other organelles Fungus: Can be made of 1 or more cells Have 1 or more nuclei & other organelles

6 Plants: Multicellular organisms Have a nucleus & other organelles
1. Eukaryotes (cont.) Plants: Multicellular organisms Have a nucleus & other organelles Have a cell wall Have chloroplasts: (organelles for making food via photosynthesis ) Photosynthesis: Carbon Dioxide + Water  Glucose + Oxygen Animal: Multicellular organisms Have no cell wall

7 2. Prokaryotes Archaobacteria: Eubacteria:
Prokaryotes are bacteria. They * Are unicellular organisms. * Have no nucleus * Contain no membrane bound organelles. Archaobacteria: * Bacteria that live in extreme conditions. (ex. near volcanoes; the poles; the Dead Sea & possibly Mars) Eubacteria: * Most bacteria including those that live in soil & on skin & those that cause disease.
