2 By the 4th century B.C., ancient Greece had been weakened by the Peloponnesian War.

3 During the middle of that century, Macedonia, led by Philip II, began invading and conquering Greece. Philip II

4 Macedonia was able to conquer Greece due to their unusually well-trained army and because Greek city-states failed to unite.

In 336 B.C., Philip II died and his son, Alexander the Great, rose to power and created a huge empire for Macedonia. Aristotle tutoring Alexander

6 After Alexander finished conquering Greece, he conquered Egypt, the Persian Empire, and the Indus Valley.

7 Alexander’s conquests led to the creation and spread of Hellenistic culture, which combined the cultures of all of Alexander’s conquered areas. Alexandria, Egypt

8 In 323 B.C., Alexander died suddenly and his empire was divided by his generals, giving areas such as Greece more independence again.
