3. Nile Flooding The Nile flooded on a regular, predictable schedule
Egypt grew up around the Nile. City-States in Egypt were united because they were confined to a narrow river valley and had to work together. Irrigation was also TOUGH work.
City-States around the Nile were rich in vegetation, it was not just desert!

Basin Irrigation: Flat fields along the river that could hold water. Some were as large as 50,000 acres. They would flood and remain flooded for up to 6 weeks. They would drain when the river receded and leave silt. Then they would sow crops in the basin.

Other civilizations (Mesopotamians) began to depend on Egypt for agriculture
By 1500 BCE Egypt was the wealthiest civilization in ancient ME. (gold, silver, gems, wood)
They also built the Canal of the Pharaoh's present day Suez Canal.
