6th grade warm ups Week of

Monday (Mon.) WU: What is an ocean current and how are they influenced? Ans: 1: An ocean current is a stream like movement of water. 2: Ocean currents are influenced by weather, the Earth’s rotation, and the position of the continents.

Tuesday (Tues.) WU: What is a surface current and what is it controlled by? Ans: 1:A surface current is a horizontal movement of ocean water that is caused by the wind and that occurs at or near the ocean’s surface. 2: It is controlled by global winds, the Corolis effect, and continental deflection.

Wednesday (Wed.) 4-25-18 WU: What are global winds?
Ans: 1:Global winds are winds that affect how ocean current flow. 2:Near the equator—winds blow ocean water East to West 3:Near the poles—winds blow ocean water West to East

Thursday (Thurs.) WU: What is the Coriolis Effect and how does it affect surface currents? Ans: 1:The Coriolis effect is the apparent curving of a moving object from a straight path due to the Earth’s rotation. 2: The Coriolis Effect causes surface current in the Northern Hemisphere to turn clockwise and surrface currents in the Southern Hemisphere turn counter-clockwise. (next)

Friday (Fri.) WU: How does a continent affect the movement of a surface current? Ans: When a surface current meets a continent, the current will deflect, or change its direction.
