6 After conducting a DRA, teachers select appropriate texts by matching student behaviors with a text that allows for a small amount of new learning (generally the student controls 90-95% of the text). Teachers may make professional decisions to select text in which students control 95+% of the text at times, based on the students particular needs (confidence, fluency). Because we only DRA at B,M,E of year, we use running records to assess where students are at least monthly. For readers in SST, RR’s should be given biweekly. But WHEN? As they read in your guided reading lesson, or immediately after other readers head back to their seats. It will take less than 5 minutes.
