Continental Slope The descending slope which connects the sea floor to the continental shelf.

Continental Rise The gently sloping surface at the base of the continental slope.

Sea Mount A mountain rising from the ocean seafloor that does not reach the surface of the water and thus is not an island. These typically are from extinct volcanoes.

Volcanic Island Seamounts that reach the surface of the ocean. When the volcanoes on the ocean floor erupt they can create mountains so high that their peaks break the surface of the ocean.

Abyssal Plain Flat or gently sloping areas of the deep ocean basin floor that lie between the bottom of the continental rise and a mid-ocean ridge.

Continental Shelf The extended perimeter of each continent. This is where you go swimming when you’re at the beach.

Mid-Ocean Ridge An underwater mountain range that usually has a valley known as a rift running along the center formed by plate tectonics. Typically an area where oceanic spreading occurs.

Trench Long but narrow depressions on the sea floor. These are the deepest part of the ocean floor and usually are extremely long.
