The countries that were in the war needed to reach a peace agreement
Leaders from more than 32 countries met in Versailles, near Paris in January 1919 to talk about peace

5. Important – don’t get confused!
Paris Peace Conference = the conference at the Palace of Versailles, started January 1919 Treaty of Versailles = The Treaty that resulted from this conference, signed June 1919

8. David Lloyd George didn’t want Germany to be treated too badly
He thought this would lead to another war
Most British people wanted the Germans dealt with very harshly
He had to think of his people

9. Woodrow Wilson did not want to damage Germany too much
He made up ‘fourteen points’ which he thought countries could stick to in order to make peace
He also wanted to set up a ‘League of Nations’ which countries would join so that they would not go to war again

10. Georges Clemenceau wanted to totally destroy Germany
Remember Germany and France were old enemies!
He wanted Germany to lose all their power
He also wanted Alsace and Lorraine back
He wanted Germany to pay for all the damage they had caused
