1 Recycled Steel Process Chain Optimization
Aditya Ozarkar Project Guide Prof.Lesley Frame Department of Technology Management University of Bridgeport Introduction : The aim is to contribute a better understanding of regional distribution of scrap steel grade composition The entire process of extracting useful steel from scrap collected from various sources can be optimized through research and improvements in the various stages of this process cycle. Process has several steps but for this research, the focus is on collection, sorting and distribution aspect of the big picture. The recycling process is as in the figure below Conclusion: Thus we can assume, South Central region of America consumes Shredded grade of scrap steel primarily which means the acceptable Cu content of this region scrap would be around 0.22 weight %. Such estimate can help steel manufacturers indirectly control input scrap composition. Results: End-Of-Life vehicles are shredded and fragmented for scrap processing. Such scrap generally contains high amount of copper which is a major contamination in the scrap. Cu cannot be completely removed but instead can only be diluted in its concentration Product Usage Discarded Product Collection Recycle Scrap from industries or household scrap is collected by scrap dealers. They purchase the scrap based on weight of bulk scrap using designated bins. Specifications of dealers vary as to what scrap variability is accepted by them The map above gives an overview of the scrap processors which would deal with scrap steel with higher copper content. Considering the analysis of the grades of steel i.e. Bushings, shredded and Plate & structural steel. Research Methods : Material Flow Analysis (MFA) – Here the analysis refers to the flow of scrap, extraction of steel from that scrap, analysis of the composition based on source of scrap collection. Different scrap sources = variation of scrap composition = poor quality of final steel product. Supply Chain Network Design – Identifying the sources from where scrap can be purchased as well as facilities which consume this scrap to produce usable steel. Depending type of scrap processor such as auto-shredder, the composition of that scrap steel can be estimated. Supply Chain Balancing Ferrous scrap supply Scrap yard Shredders Ferrous scrap demand Scrap Processors Steel Melting facility The scope of this research is narrowed down to three grades of steel scrap for better understanding.
