Associate in Arts BA in Literary Studies (75 credits) English Department College of Arts, Letters, and Education Why study English and Literature? At the heart of the English program is a passion for critically, creatively, and professionally understanding and using the English language. The Literary Studies option emphasizes the understanding of great literary works and the writing of analytical essays. Students will refine their speaking and writing skills through critical examinations of literary text. Scholarship Opportunities The EWU English Department offers three scholarships per year to students achieving academic excellence in their major. The Ralph Tieje, Jr. Endowment is awarded to an English major in his or her fourth year on the basis of scholarship and character. In recent years, the amount awarded has been $1,350. The Harold and Verna Kleiner Memorial Fund is an annual scholarship awarded to a worthy and deserving student studying any option in the English Department. The selection of the scholarship recipient and amount is determined jointly by the university's Board of Trustees and English Department faculty. In recent years, the amount awarded has been $375. The Colton-Huston Scholarship is awarded each year to no more than four female undergraduate English majors who are studying either American or English literature in the Literary Studies program or the Secondary English Education program. Room to Explore This major allows room for a minor or elective courses as students strive for the 180 credits required to graduate.
