3 Role of the Advisory Council
Provide feedback on program goals Review program results Make recommendations about the school counseling program Advocate for the school counseling program Goals are developed by school counselors and explained based on school data, surveys, and overall feedback. I do this at my Fall meeting. You will present to your council what changed in your school because of your work. How were your goals affected. I measure data from small groups and classroom lessons and present this information at my Spring meeting. Develop ideas for improving areas of need. Being a voice for what you do. Your council has a stake in what you're doing and sees the change agent you are based on cold hard factual evidence.

4 Consider the purpose of the advisory council
Where to Begin Consider the purpose of the advisory council The best advisory councils are willing to contribute to improving the school counseling program

5 Determine potential members
Where to Begin Determine potential members Think of various roles within your school Identify a person in each of those categories Who gets what you do? Who works well with you and others? Consider the optimal number of members Create your final list and invite them So what are some of the roles within your school? Parents, teachers, administrators, community leaders. Business partners, students… Who are the leaders in your school? Who is onboard with and gets what you do? Who will be willing to and able to meet with you once each semester? If you have professional building days try to work your meetings into the schedule so you don’t have to ask people to volunteer personal time. Too many will limit quality discussions and too few will limit possible perspectives. At the same time you don’t want anyone who is too acquiescent or too argumentative. Acquiescing to all ideas limits improvement and debating everything can impede forward movement.

6 Agenda’s Meetings should be organized in a way that facilitates the presentation of information and allows adequate time for discussion. Fall Meeting Provide an overall picture of services and programs already offered Presentation of relevant data: attendance, test scores, dropout rate, FAFSA completion, how many and who are taking advanced courses, school climate... Present and discuss program goals Be sure to include time for questions and discussion of each item

7 Spring Meeting Focus on progress toward goals established at Fall meeting Include presentation of data showing progress Include discussion on hurdles and successes along the way Discuss challenges and any special events or experiences Plan for the upcoming year
