1 DO Now: What does fair mean? (please write a minimum of two complete sentences)

3 Essential Question: How are temperature and kinetic energy related?
States of Matter Essential Question: How are temperature and kinetic energy related?

4 What is Matter? Anything that has mass and takes up space.

5 Do Now

6 The Law of Conservation of Mass:
Says that the mass of ALL substances present before a chemical change equals mass of ALL substance after the change. MATTER CAN NOT BE CREATED NOR DESTROYED.

7 What does Kinetic mean? Resulting from motion.
Kinetic Energy: Energy that results from motion.

8 What is Kinetic Theory?:
Explains how particles in matter behave. All matter is composed of particles

9 2. Particles are in constant , random motion.

10 3. Particles collide with each other and walls of their containers.

11 What are states of matter?
Solid Liquid Gas Plasma

12 Do Now:

13 Solids Characteristics: Definite Shape and Definite Volume.
Particles: Closely packed in geometric arrangement.

14 Liquids Characteristics: Indefinite shape and definite volume.
Particles: Have more space and slide past each other.

15 Gases Characteristics: Indefinite shape and Indefinite volume.
Particles: Have energy to spread out evenly in container.

16 Plasma Characteristic: High temperature gas.
Particles: Positively and negatively charge.

17 Temperature The state of a sample of matter depends on Temperature.
Temperature: related to the average kinetic energy of an objects atoms or molecules.

18 Thermal Expansion: Definition: Increase in the size of a substance when the temperature increases and contracts when cooled. Exception: Water- when cooled it expands.
