2. I. Austria and Czechoslovakia Fall
Hitler wanted more living space.
1938, German troops march into Austria unopposed, unify Austria and Germany.
Sudetenland- western border region of Czechoslovakia, home to 3 million German-speaking people.
Hitler claimed Czechs abusing Sudetenland Germans.
1938, Munich Agreement signed; Sudetenland handed over to Germany.
Act of Appeasement- giving up principles to pacify an aggressor.

3. II. German Offensive Begins
March 1939, Germany takes over Czechoslovakia.
Hitler turns attention to Poland; claim Poles mistreat Germans in Poland.
Hitler wants to invade Poland, but Soviets would intervene.
Nazi-Soviet Nonaggression Pact signed:
Commitment to never attack each other.
Poland is divided up.

4. Blitzkrieg- German’s new military strategy. “Lightning War”.
Fast tanks and more powerful aircraft to take the enemy by surprise.
Used to take over Poland.
Britain and France declare war on Germany.
WWII Begins September 1939

5. III. France and Britain Fight On
France’s Maginot Line proved to be ineffective.
Italy and Germany invade France.
France falls; Germany occupy northern France.

6. Summer 1940, Germany prepares fleet to invade Britain.
Battle of Britain: German planes bomb British targets.
Britain used radar to track, shoot down German planes.
Hitler calls off invasion of Britain.
German, British continue to bomb each other’s cities.
