1 Workshop on Academic Transformation And Collaboration
October 26th 2010 Steve Day Pearson Education

2 Today’s Agenda What is the role of Technology in Course Redesign?
What technology tools exist to aid in this process? Math Redesign Case Study at Jackson State Different Models of Redesign Mastering Platform

3 “They” are not like “us.”

4 We had . . .

5 They have . . .

6 We had….

7 They have . . .

8 Current Teaching Practices
And expectations Skill/Knowledge based Quantitative course focus mostly on skills (or skills that should have been learned in previous course.) Graduation Rates and Teacher Accountability Largely teacher centered (lecture followed by homework – maybe) Highly unsuccessful for many students

9 What is “Course Redesign?”
The process of redesigning the way content of an entire course is delivered, using technology to: Increase pass rates Increase retention Improve return on investment Save time Save money Increase Student engagement in the learning process Over the past few days you heard Michelle Renda and Becky Anderson discuss Course Redesign in the Dev Math session and MML session. They say repetition is the key to learning so can someone tell us what Course Redesign is?

12 What Makes MyMathLab Successful?
to 192,519 courses created 23,703,029 tests and quizzes submitted 50,817,508 homeworks submitted 2.2 million unique students Since September grading 1 million assignments per day! Used in 85% of All NCAT Math Redesigns!

13 Jackson State Math Lecture Classes
Students uninvolved with their learning Students not responsible for their learning Students must keep up with the class (or stay behind with the class) “I hate math” “I can’t learn math” Math unrelated to major Large numbers of failures and dropouts

14 Jackson State Math Redesign
Redesign Mandates Look at the program from top to bottom Must be modular based Must have a technology component Must be individualized Must have open exit Must reduce cost Must raise completion rates

15 Jackson State Continued

16 SMART Math Center at Jackson State
JSCC DEVELOPMENTAL MATH REDESIGN 06/28/2010 S M A R T urviv e aster chieve eview ransfer Emporium Style On Demand Assistance by Tutors & Instructors 76 Student Stations Accommodates two classes of 30 students SMART Math Center at Jackson State 16

17 Results of Redesign 2009—reduced the total cost by 20%
Increased the pass rate by 45%

18 Results Awarded the Bellwether Award for Excellence in Community College Instructional Services and Programs Spring 2010 Given to only one community college annually in each of three categories 100 colleges applied

19 “Emporium” Model Univ of Alabama
All classes in computer lab setting Lab attendance required Online homework & quizzes Prerequisite requirements ensure mastery Students get individualized help when needed “One room schoolhouse.” Multiple courses at same time See notes in slide -

20 Case Study #1: Univ of Alabama Emporium Model
Subsequent Course Completion Rate Success Rates (ABC) More results in MTG Vol 4. Positive results Again: good return on investment!

21 Hybrid Model Florence Darlington CC
Blend face-to-face with online videos & exercises Online self-assessment with immediate feedback Prerequisite requirements ensure mastery Self-remediation using Study Plan 24/7 online learning See slide for description…

22 Case Study #2: Florence-Darlington Technical College Hybrid Model
Subsequent Course Completion Rate Final Exam Scores Have profs open . Making the Grade. This is of interest to Deans and Department Chairs This slide shows good “return on investment”

23 Supplemental Model College of Sequoias
Traditional seated classroom Low-stakes homework & high-stakes quizzes “Contract” to encourage work outside classroom Class time: less lecture, more interaction In-class worksheets; Students “show work” See notes in slide….George Woodbury’s school. .Homework in MML.

24 Case Study #3: College of Sequoias Supplemental Model
Required vs Optional Success Rates (ABC) In the conclusions section of this case study: if MML is not required, student scores do not improve (poor return on investment)

27 Student Success with Mastering Assessment is the Key!!
Require Mastering for a minimum of 10% of the final course grade. Assign a mix of tutorials, activities, and test bank problems. Use the recommended grading settings. Set student expectations.
