2 Representing the 3 States of Matter
Divide the class into three (3) groups. Group 1 – Arrange yourselves to demonstrate the arrangement and movement of particles in a solid. Group 2 – Arrange yourselves to demonstrate the arrangement and movement of particles in a liquid. Group 3 – Arrange yourselves to demonstrate the arrangement and movement of particles in a gas.

How does water move from one state to another? What do you think happens to the particles as water moves from one state to another?

Temperature constant = avg. speed of particles constant Speed of particles changes = temperature changes Arrangement of the particles changes Particles become less organized as their energy increases (just like students!) Particles become more organized as their energy drops

Hydrogen (H2) a gas, even at coldest winter temperatures to make liquid H2, cool H2 gas to -235oC to make solid H2, extreme cold temperatures and high pressures required

15 When a Liquid Evaporates
In a liquid, particles move at many different speeds At the surface of a liquid, some of the faster moving particles are able to escape into the air Slower moving particles stay in the liquid state

16 When a Liquid Evaporates
Slower motion = lower average energy = lower temperature As the higher energy particles leave the surface, the remaining liquid is cooler than the original liquid, which helps cool lower particles This phenomenon is called EVAPORATIVE COOLING
