HIV/AIDS WORKSHOP FOR FAITH BASED ORGANIZATIONS AND NATIONAL AIDS COUNCILS IN ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA FROM 12TH – 16TH MAY 2003 DR. MARGARET GACHARA DIRECTOR NATIONAL AIDS CONTROL COUNCIL, KENYA

2 NACC Institutional Structure
NACC has established an expanded programme: Through the development of network,partnerships and collaboration with all the stakeholders: Faith based Organizations – KIRAC Private sector and civil society Industrial sector including small and medium size entrepreneurs Federation of Kenya Employers(FKE), Kenya HIV/AIDS Private Sector Business Council, Civil society organizations (Youth, Women,NGOs and CBOs) Public sector Establishment of ACUs in line ministries, departments, state corporations and parastatals, Public and Private Universities) NACC administration and coordination up to the community level through committees.

3 Multisectoral Approach and Networking
Promote sharing of information and experiences on best practices on HIV/AIDS interventions; Strengthens advocacy programmes through concerted efforts; Wider participation by communities and partners (CBOs, NGOs, FBOs and social groups);

4 Involvement of NGOs and CBOs
60% of the expected MAP funds to the communities will be through NGOs, CBOs and FBOs; Currently over 800 CBOs and NGOs have been funded in a span of 8 months; Involvement of FMA in financial disbursement Involvement of KANCO in capacity Building Involvement of CBS for Monitoring and Evaluation; Joint AIDS Programme Review (JAPR) by all stakeholders;

5 Kenya Inter-Religious AIDS Consortium (KIRAC)
Concept: Religious organizations for the largest institutions and ministries for a common strategy Coverage is wide. Across social, cultural and geographical diversities Process Religious leaders were called together in 2001; Share, learn, inspire one another on HIV/AIDS; Establish institutional specific initiatives Establish a forum for networking KIRAC Steering Committee was established and:- Organized first inter-Religious Conference; Developed Concept paper (Vision, Mission and Objectives) Developed Constitution for the registration of KIRAC as an organization;

6 Next Steps Strengthen forums for information and experience sharing at National and regional levels; Document and role out best practices; Mobilize resources to support initiatives; Support FBOs to respond to the country HIV/AIDS Strategy; Build the capacities of the network to establish institutional structure for implementation by individual FBOs;

7 Network of National HIV/AIDS Program Practitioners
Network of National HIV/AIDS Commissioners and Secretariat staff Mandate is to share lessons learnt in the implementation of the multi-sectoral projects; Two meetings in Nairobi One meeting in Sierra Leone; Planned meetings on Fiduciary, Procurement, project formulation all aimed at Capacity building;

8 Update on the ICASA The International Conference on AIDS in Sub-saharan in Africa
