2 Prefixes Co-/Com-/Con- (Latin) together or with as in cooperate which means to work together. Contra- (Latin) against as in contradict which means to go against somebody’s meaning. Mid- (Latin) middle as in midtown which means in the middle of town. Intra- (Latin) within as in intrapersonal which means understanding the your relationship with yourself Inter- (Latin) between or among as in interpersonal which means understanding relationships among others.

3 Suffixes -gram [item written or drawn] as in diagram which is a drawn model of something. -ory [place where] as in observatory which is a place where you observe something. -fic [making, causing, creating] as in horrific which is to cause horror. -escent [becoming] as in luminescent which means to be luminous (glowing). -ation [action or process of] as in saturation which is to become saturated.

4 Root Words Prim (Latin) first or basic as in primal which means like the first. Zoo (Greek) animal as in zoology which means the study of animals. Manus (Latin) hand as in manual which means to be done by hand. Ver (Latin) truth as in verify which means to prove to be true. Frater (Latin) brother as in fraternity which is a collection of brothers.

5 Reading Vocabulary Connotation - the idea or feeling that a word (or piece) evokes in the reader. Denotation - the literal meaning of a word (or piece). Think dictionary. Density - the difficulty of a text considering vocabulary, jargon, figurative language and complexity of ideas. Accessibility - the ability of a specified audience to read and understand a work based on the markers described in “density” (can apply to other forms of pieces). Vernacular - the vocabulary used by a group of people based on geographical location, education, etc.
