Preface Because the members of our Sanga wanted to go on with our regular Bhakti sastri, Bh. Vai., Bh. Ved. studies, and because we didn’t have the resources, we are just doing Bh. Ved. curriculum development. The following Module Study Guide needs much work, but we consider that we have done enough for our team to earn the title Bhaktivedanta and expect the next team to do their share. 2018 Dec. 1 ASA HpSwami, Srivasa Pt, Upendra, Srinivasa Das’ & Sundara radhika Devi Dasi.

Canto 8: Withdrawal of the Cosmic Creations
How many famous Avataras, mentioned in Dasa avatara Stotra, are described in this Canto? Are there other Avataras? You must know the verses from Dasa-avatara Stotra for these prominent Lila-avataras? In this Module all five chapters are 124-pages and 101-verses or 1.24 p/v 13-15 can be covered in one week and in another..

FUTURE MANUS & ADVENT OF VAMANA DEVA SB 8.13: Description of Future Manus SB 8.14: The System of Universal Management SB 8.15: Bali Mahārāja Conquers the Heavenly Planets SB 8.16: Executing the Payo-vrata Process of Worship SB 8.17: The Supreme Lord Agrees to Become Aditi’s Son Looking at this module as a whole, five chapters. Two questions arose in our mind: 1) Is the prayer, ‘so ‘sav abhadra..”, that we are looking for in the Payo-vrata sacrifice, and 2) Again, why does each section, chapter, follow the last? The outline of the contents? We get strength to study if we follow our natural questions

Chapter Summaries Of the fourteen Manus, six Manus have already been described. Now, this chapter will consecutively describe each Manu from the seventh to the fourteenth. This chapter describes the duties allotted to Manu by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This chapter describes how Bali, after performing the Viśvajit-yajña, received the benediction of a chariot and various kinds of paraphernalia for war, with which he attacked the King of heaven. As described in this chapter, because Aditi, the mother of the demigods, was very afflicted, her husband, Kaśyapa Muni, told her how to observe vows in austerities for the benefit of her sons. As explained in this chapter, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, being very pleased by the payo-vrata ceremony performed by Aditi, appeared before her in full opulence. At her request, the Lord agreed to become her son.

Chapter 14 Verse Breakdown
1 : Question by Mahārāja Parīkṣit 2 – 11: The various activities that are ordained by the Lord under different Manus
12
Text 1 – What is Maharaja Parikshit’s Question?
Text 4 Wonderful purport: Srila Prabhupada says in the last line after glorifying Hari nama Sankirtana, “this is the sum and substance of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement.” Text 5 Again in the purport, Srila Prabhupada emphasizes the need to preach. Text 6 Srila Prabhupada writes in the purport, “Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is the incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead in this Age of Kali, and He will be easily satisfied if the saṅkīrtana movement is spread vigorously all over the world. This will also make people happy without a doubt.”
13
Text 8 From puport “In the present age, the sum and substance of all Vedic knowledge is to be found in Bhagavad-gītā, which is personally taught by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and the same Supreme Godhead, assuming the form of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, expands the teachings of Bhagavad-gītā all over the world.”
14
Text 10 From the purport: “therefore, accept the Supreme Personality of Godhead as He is and remain happy simply by chanting the glories of the Lord.” Text 11 How many Manus are there in one day of Brahma? Suggested Essay Write one page describing the various activities that happen under the reign of a particular Manu and how the Lord participates in them.

SB 8.15: Bali Mahārāja Conquers the Heavenly Planets
36 Verses, 22 Pages. Therefore, P/V = .66 Very small chapter, but intense. This chapter describes how Bali, after performing the Viśvajit-yajña, received the benediction of a chariot and various kinds of paraphernalia for war, with which he attacked the King of heaven. All the demigods, being afraid of him, left the heavenly planets and went away, following the instructions of their guru.
17
SB śrī-rājovāca baleḥ pada-trayaṁ bhūmeḥ kasmād dharir ayācata bhūteśvaraḥ kṛpaṇa-val labdhārtho ’pi babandha tam Mahārāja Parīkṣit inquired: The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the proprietor of everything. Why did He beg three paces of land from Bali Mahārāja like a poor man, and when He got the gift for which He had begged, why did He nonetheless arrest Bali Mahārāja? I am very much anxious to know the mystery of these contradictions. Where was this begging described? This question is the basis for many subsequent chapters.
18
SB There also appeared yellow horses like those of Indra, and a flag marked with a ______.
19
SB He also saluted Prahlāda Mahārāja and offered obeisances to him. How could Prahlada participate in this rebellion against heaven? SB King Indra’s city was full of pleasing orchards and gardens, such as the Nandana garden. Because of the weight of the flowers, leaves and fruit, the branches of the eternally existing trees were bending down. The gardens were visited by pairs of chirping birds and singing bees. The entire atmosphere was celestial. Nice descrip-tion of heaven, no? Useful for preaching?
20
SB Everlastingly beautiful and youthful women, who were dressed with clean garments, glittered in the city like fires with flames. They all possessed the quality of śyāmā. What are three quaities mentioned describing śyāmā women? SB No one who was sinful, envious, violent toward other living entities, cunning, falsely proud, lusty or greedy could enter that city. The people who lived there were all devoid of these faults. Sounds like Vaikuntha! Explain difference including SB
21
SB Kindly inform me. What is the cause for Bali Mahārāja’s strength, endeavor, influence and victory? How has he become so enthusiastic? Good question. What is the answer??? SB purport is nectar for the ears. Brhaspati is called Guru here and Sukracharya called spiritual master, but it is lauded when the disciple disobeys him. Would you agree that Srila Prabhupada sometimes calls an only Brahman realized or Paramatma realized person as spiritual master?
22
SB Purport: The brāhmaṇas are called dvija-deva, and kṣatriyas are generally called nara-deva. The word deva actually refers to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The brāhmaṇas guide human society in becoming happy by satisfying Lord Viṣṇu, and according to their advice, the kṣatriyas, who are called nara-deva, keep law and order so that other people, namely the vaiśyas and śūdras, may properly follow regulative principles. In this way, people are gradually elevated to Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Such a nice description of VAD. Does it apply to our organizing our service in ISKCON? Does a real brahmana think he is really a brahmana?

Canto 8: Withdrawal of the Cosmic Creations
SB 8.16: Executing the Payo-vrata Process of Worship Discussion Points from the Translations 7 – ‘offering a little water’ – Do you do this? It is so important. 8 – ‘…did not offer oblations of ghee into the fire…’. Does this mean that in the Kali-yuga it is the duty of a chaste lady whose husband is away is to worship their Deities especially with Japa, Kirtan, songs and SB recitation? 11 – Diti Responds. What were the nature and content of Kasyapa’s questions? 14 – How is Kasyapa different from Lord Visnu? Who is his father?
24
Canto 8: Withdrawal of the Cosmic Creations
SB 8.16: Executing the Payo-vrata Process of Worship 15 – She has glorified Kasyapa and now asks for a benediction. Was she flattering him? How does she compare to Devahuti? 16 – She seems to be denying what she said earlier. 18 – Kasyapa Uvaca. 20 Compare Diti and Aditi’s relations with Kasyapa Muni. 24 From where did Kasyapa. get this Vaidhi bhakti?
25
Canto 8: Withdrawal of the Cosmic Creations
SB 8.16: Executing the Payo-vrata Process of Worship 25 – When? What? 26 - Is this before the milk fast? 39 – What is the dvādaśākṣara-mantra? 41 – Take sweet rice Prasad and fast on milk? 62 – End. This is the best of Visnu yajnas, no? We should do this? 27-37 – Are the fascinating prayers offered by Kasyapa. Please look at them, read them, illuminate them.
26
Canto 8: Withdrawal of the Cosmic Creations
SB 8.16: Executing the Payo-vrata Process of Worship Other Discussion Points by Buck White 5 – Refresh, “yan maithunādi-gṛhamedhi-sukhaṁ hi tuccham”. Where is this at? Also, It is cited in NOI. Also, is cited just as in NOI. 6 – What does atithi mean. At least offer? Kasyapa asks about 8-questions of the cause of Aditi’s despondence. Do we find similar enquiries in the the first two cantos eg. Bhumi and Dharma. 11 - Why take Sannyasa?
27
19 – This is a big purport and very useful for Ministry of Education thoughts. How many times does Srila Prabhupada say, “spiritual education”. We challenge the materialistic universities that they don’t discuss the Atma. What if they say that they have department of biology and philosophy.

Canto 8: Withdrawal of the Cosmic Creations
8.17: The Lord Agrees to Become Aditi’s Son Pages: 24, Verses 28, Verse per page 0.86 Chapter Summary: SPOG being pleased with Aditi performing payo - varta devotional process, He appeared before her in full opulence and agreed to become her son. Verses Break Down: 1 – 10: Lord appears before Aditi & she worships Him. 11 – 17: Lord responses to Aditi’s worship. 18 – 21: Lord agrees to become a son of Aditi & Kasyapa. 22 – 23: SPOG through Kasyapa was transferred into Aditi’s womb. 24 – 28: Brahma offers prayers to the Lord.
29
8.17: The Lord Agrees to Become Aditi’s Son
Memorize Verse: (Ref: ) yasya deve parā bhaktir yathā deve tathā gurau tasyaite kathitā hy arthāḥ prakāśante mahātmanaḥ “Only unto those great souls who have implicit faith in both the Lord and the spiritual master are all the imports of the Vedic knowledge automatically revealed.” (Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad 6.23). It is further stated, tuṣyeyaṁ sarva-bhūtātmā guru-śuśrūṣayā and taranty añjo bhavārṇavam. Simply by rendering service to the spiritual master, one crosses the ocean of nescience and returns home, back to Godhead. Thus he gradually sees the Supreme Lord face to face and enjoys life in association with the Lord. 8.17: The Lord Agrees to Become Aditi’s Son

Discussion Points: For spiritual advancement one must have a complete faith in guru, who helps disciple make a progress in spiritual life. By staunch faith in the spiritual master and the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one not only controls the senses but also realizes the Supreme Lord. One’s spiritual life is doomed if he thinks independently & doesn’t care for the instructions of the spiritual master. yasya prasadadan (without grace) na gatih (means of advancement) kuto pi (from anywhere) Aditi was successful because she followed the instructions of her husband & spiritual master.
31
Devotee controls mind and senses by concentrating mind upon the lotus feet of Vasudeva, Krishna; then one can engage himself in the service of the Lord. Refresh: SB sa vai manah Krishna – padaravindayoh) Maharaja Ambrisa by concentrating his mind in meditating on lotus feet of Krishna, words describing the glories of the Lord, hands in cleansing Lord’s temple, and his ears in hearing the words spoken by Krishna or about Krishna practiced all 9 processes of devotional service. Devotee does not need to practice hatha-yoga to control the mind and senses; his mind and senses are automatically controlled because of unalloyed devotional service unto the Lord.
32
(4) Lord dressed in yellow garments and bearing a conchshell, disc, club and lotus in His four hand then appeared before Aditi. (7) Aditi was certain the Lord has appeared as Rama – pati husband of all good fortune; she thought of Lord as Yajna – pati because she performed the yajna of payo-vrata.
33
(8) Lord is master of those who observe vows and austerity & He bestows benedictions upon them.
Lord is acyuta, the infallible because He takes care of His devotees; Bg – kaunteya pratijanihi name bhaktah pranasyati: “O son of Kunti declare it boldly that My devotee never perishes”. Anyone inimical to the devotees is certainly vanquished by the mercy of the Lord. Lord is known as tirtha-pada, indicating that all the holy places are at His feet, or whatever He touches with the lotus feet becomes a holy place.
34
Any place where SPOG displays His pastimes, such as Vrindavan or Dvaraka becomes a holy place, visiting the holy dham is one of the five most important item of devotional service. Bhagavad-Gita begins (Bg. 1.1) with the words dharma-ksetre kuru-ksetre, because Lord was present on the battlefield of Kuru-ksetre, it became a dharma-ksetra, a place of pilgrimage. The chanting of the holy name of the Lord (Refresh -siksastaka-1 & SB ) is pleasing to the ear, and it expands good fortune to the audience who hears it chanted.
35
9) Anyone trying to become fully KC must know Lord’s glories as far as they are possible to understand. Devotee by surrendering unto the SPOG surpasses the influence of illusory energy (Refresh - Bg –daivi hy esa--). Lord sitting in devotee’s heart as supersoul gives intelligence to him by which one is sure never to fall into illusion. (12) Lord is situated in everyone’s heart (Refresh Bg ) & knows everything and He does the needful to relieve the suffering of His devotee.
36
(12) When one is protected by Brahmans & Vaishnavas, no one can defeat him. Lord’s first inclination is to give all benedictions to cows and Brahmans --- go brahamana-hitaya ca. If Brahmana favor someone, Lord doesn’t interfere. (17) Lord tells to Aditi I have been satisfied by the activities of your vow & I must find some means to favor you. My worship never goes in vain but certainly gives the desired results according to what one desires (Refresh Bg ye yatha mam--).
37
(18) Lord agrees to become a son of Aditi because He was very pleased with her austerity of worshiping Him with great payo-vrata ceremony for the sake of protecting her sons, and Lord was also pleased with Kasyapa Muni’s austerities. (19) Lord instructs Aditi to: “Always think of Me as being situated in the body of your husband Kasyapa, go worship your husband, who has been purified by performing austerity.
