1 Bellringer Reflect on the prompt below and write a response that is AT LEAST two complete sentences long. Pay attention to standard rules of grammar and composition as you construct your response. Thomas Jefferson stated in “Declaration of Independence” that “all men are created equal.” What is meant by this statement? How has this idea been supported or challenged throughout history? He means that it should be obvious to everyone that all men are created equally. Throughout history injustices have kept many minorities from having equal rights or being treated equally which challenges this idea; however, as America has aged it has attempted to create more equality for its citizens which supports the idea.

3 Homework By the end of the week (Saturday night—January 12th), you must send your classroom teacher an following the guidelines on the previous slide. You will either get a 100 or a 0 for this assignment, and late credit will NOT be given. This means that if you do not have an address, you MUST create an account by Saturday night. The main text we will read in this unit is “Hope, Despair, and Memory.” This is Elie Wiesel’s Nobel Prize lecture which argues the importance of memory to humanity. At the end of this unit you will be asked to write an essay which explores how Wiesel’s claims relate to the claims made in other texts throughout the unit. What We’re Doing in Q3

7 How are we going to reach this goal?
Over the course of the unit, we will build our understanding about how an author creates and furthers a claim and examine how memory affects our society. We will also look at how texts connect to each other to help us better understand how many different authors through different mediums and genres can explore similar ideas.

17 Text Dependent Questions Even/Odd Protocol
Jefferson chose to begin the Declaration of Independence with the words, “The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America.” Was this necessary? Could the 13 colonies have declared independence if they were not unanimous? How does Jefferson explain the reason for a formal declaration of independence? Why does Jefferson state the “causes which impel them to separate?” Is this necessary?  Text Dependent Questions Even/Odd Protocol It was necessary to begin the Declaration in this manner because the only way the colonies could pose any threat to England was if they worked together; therefore, it would have been impossible, or at least less successful in the long run, for the colonies to declare independence without standing together. He explains that it is necessary when a government is being abandoned in favor of a new one to explain exactly why this is happening. In other words, it is necessary to “break up” with England, not just ignore the country and attempt independence without its knowledge.

21 Model Summary When it is necessary to split from a government, it is important to explain why that split is necessary. Jefferson and his associates believed that all men were created equal and had certain non- negotiable rights. He asserted that the job of a government is to ensure these rights for its constituents, and if said government is not fulfilling that obligation, then it should be ended. Only when there is a pattern of abuse should a government be ended. This was the situation in the colonies and the reason for declaring independence from England and its king. What makes my model summary statement good? Does your model have the same qualities?
