1 The War of 1812 Vocab 6.4

2 Blockade To seal off a place in order to prevent goods or people from entering or leaving. Usually done by ship.

3 Impressment The act or policy of seizing people, or property, for public service or use.

4 Embargo An official ban on trade or other commercial activity with a particular country.

5 Treaty of Ghent An agreement negotiated in Ghent, Belgium, and signed on December 24, 1814, by Great Britain and the United States to end the War of The treaty included the concessions to the United States of all British territory in the American Northwest, which enabled American expansion.

6 Battle of New Orleans American forces under General Andrew Jackson defeated British forces on January 8, 1815, several weeks after the signing of the Treaty of Ghent, which had ended the war. Neither group of troops had gotten the news when the battle began. During the battle the British had more than 700 killed and 1,400 injured while the Americans had only 8 killed and 13 wounded.
