1 What’s going on ?

2 Lesson Outcomes To be able to define different types of erosion, and explain how they shape the coastline. By the end of the lesson you: MUST be able to define the different types of erosion. SHOULD be able to explain how this shapes the coastline. COULD begin to explain how features of erosion are formed.

3 How do waves shape the coastline?
There are 4 types of coastal erosion: Abrasion - Bits of rock and sand in waves grind down cliff surfaces like sandpaper. Attrition - Waves smash rocks and pebbles on the shore into each other, and they break and become smoother. Hydraulic action - Air may become trapped in joints and cracks on a cliff face. When a wave breaks, the trapped air is compressed which weakens the cliff. Solution - Acids contained in sea water will dissolve some types of rock such as chalk or limestone.

5 What features do we get?

6 Features Dominoes Complete the features dominoes . Each domino has a key word and definition on it, you have to match the key word with its definition on another domino.

7 Coast Headland Crack Cave Arch Stack Stump Erosion Weathering
Where the land meets the sea An outcrop of coastline A small opening in the cliff caused by erosion A large crack in the cliff that is big enough to walk into A cave that has eroded right through the headland The roof of an arch collapses, leaving a pillar of rock The stack collapses, leaving a smaller amount of rock The wearing away of rock material The breakdown of rock material Coast Headland Crack Cave Arch Stack Stump Erosion Weathering

14 Your task is to create a coastal feature with play-doh!
Model features Your task is to create a coastal feature with play-doh! Create your landform on a piece of paper so you can label it, You need to explain how it was formed.

15 Include: Name of the landform (E.g. Arch) What erosional process is acting on it (think back to your Kung Fu)
