8 Purpose: to understand how the New Covenant is better with regard to its promises

9 I God PROMISES a New Cov- enant (8:7-9, 13)
A. The First Covenant Was Not Faultless (v 7)

10 The first covenant (Mosaic) was of God and it was perfect for the time for which it was given. It was holy, just and good (Romans 7:12-13). BUT it could not provide a perfect sacrifice for sin, or could it actually save anyone. It was faulty in this sense!

11 I God PROMISES a New Cov- enant (8:7-9, 13)
A. The First Covenant Was Not Faultless (v 7) B. The People of the First Coven- ant Were Not Faultless (vv 8-9)

12 Jeremiah 11:7-10 “For I solemnly warned your fathers in the day that I brought them up from the land of Egypt, even to this day, warning persistently, saying, ‘Listen to My voice.’ Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but walked, each one, in the stubbornness of his evil heart; therefore, I brought on them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do, but they did not.’ Then the Lord said to me, ‘A conspiracy has been found among the men of Judah and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem.’”

13 I God PROMISES a New Cov- enant (8:7-9, 13)
A. The First Covenant Was Not Faultless (v 7) B. The People of the First Coven- ant Were Not Faultless (vv 8-9) C. God Promised a New Coven- ant (vv 8-9)

14 Jeremiah 31:31-34 “‘Behold days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘When I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,’ declares the Lord. ‘But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,’ declares the Lord. ‘I will put My law within them, and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people… ‘For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.’”

15 I God PROMISES a New Cov- enant (8:7-9, 13)
A. The First Covenant Was Not Faultless (v 7) B. The People of the First Coven- ant Were Not Faultless (vv 8-9) C. God Promised a New Coven- ant (vv 8-9) D. The New Has Made the First Obsolete (Out of Date)

16 II The PROMISES of the New Covenant (8:10-12)
A. It Will Be Inward and Spirit- ual (v 10)

17 James 1:21 “Therefore putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.”

18 1 Peter 1:22-23 “Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart, for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and abiding word of God.”

19 II The PROMISES of the New Covenant (8:10-12)
A. It Will Be Inward and Spirit- ual (v 10) B. It Will Provide a Closer Walk With God (v 10) C. It Will Be With Those Who Know the Lord (v 11) D. It Will Provide True Forgiveness of Sins (v 12)

20 Here then is the ultimate reason for the blessing previously covered; because of the forgiveness of sins we can truly bat at “peace” with God!

21

22 Conclusion and Summary:
Our God is the Originator of the better way. When Jesus came to earth, something better was revealed… Christ’s sacrifice is exactly what God desired and our sin required. We have a new covenant based on better (the best) promises!
