1 Integers Multiplying

2 Solve Isabella owes $6 to each of 4 friends. How much money does she owe? Solution Owing $6 can be represented by -6. Thus the problem becomes: -6 x +4 = -24 or (-6) (+4) = -24 Isabella owes $24

3 Rules to Multiplying Integers
Example Positive x Positive = Positive Positive x Negative = Negative Negative x Positive = Negative Negative x Negative = Positive 2 x 3 = 6 2 x -3 = -6 -2 x 3 = -6 -2 x -3 = 6 Note: When you multiply a positive integer by a negative integer, the product is a negative integer. When you multiply two negative integers, the product is a positive integer.

4 Multiplying Integers 8 x 9 = -9 x -3= -5 x 10 = 6 x -7 = 72 27 -50 -42
YOUR TURN…. 8 x 9 = -9 x -3= -5 x 10 = 6 x -7 = 72 27 -50 -42

5 Integers Dividing

6 Solve Maddie owes the library $15. Each of 3 friends will help her pay off her debt. How much will each friend pay? Solution Owing $15 can be represented by -15. Thus the problem becomes: -15 ÷ +3 = -5 Each of Maddie’s friends will pay $5

7 Rules to Dividing Integers
Example Positive ÷ Positive = Positive Positive ÷ Negative = Negative Negative ÷ Positive = Negative Negative ÷ Negative = Positive 14 ÷ 7 = 2 14 ÷ -7 = - 2 -14 ÷ 7 = - 2 -14 ÷ -7 = 2 Note: When you divide a positive integer by a negative integer, the quotient is a negative integer. When you divide two negative integers, the quotient is a positive integer.

8 DIVIDING INTEGERS 72 ÷ 9 = -27 ÷ -3= -50 ÷ 5 = 42 ÷ -7 = 8 9 -10 -6
YOUR TURN…. 72 ÷ 9 = -27 ÷ -3= -50 ÷ 5 = 42 ÷ -7 = 8 9 -10 -6

9 Great Job! Finish Your Worksheet
