1 Today is Friday, December 6, 2013
Homework: None Warm UP: Warm Up Quiz

2 Helping us reach our Standard….
Goal for Today SWBAT demonstrate the ability to describe materials taken from the Earth for human use. Helping us reach our Standard…. 5-ESS3-1 Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment.

3 Mineral – nonliving material from Earth Nonrenewable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Examples – gold, iron, copper, gypsum, mica, silver Gold: jewelry, money (currency standardization) Iron – inexpensive metal; makes steel when mixed with other things, used to make cooking utensils, reinforce concrete, railroad tracks, and many other things Gypsum – used in plaster, cement, wallboard, paint, and for farming/gardening Mica – used in paint, fire extinguishers, wallboard, electrical insulation (so you don’t get shocked!!!!!!) Silver: jewelry, money (actual coins and currency standardization), batteries and electrical switches, solar panels, pre-digital photography, medicine (anti-bacterial!!!!)

4

5 We can only get these minerals by……..
MINING!!!!!!

6 Effects of mining Changes the land Air and land pollution Soil erosion

7 Water Renewed: through water cycle
Uses: drinking, growing food, making electricity Damaged: by pollution and overuse

8 Air Renewed: pollution settles out, caught in rain
Uses: oxygen for body, nitrogen for fertilizers Damaged: pollution

9 Soil Renewed: weathering rocks, decaying plants
Uses: plants depend on soil for minerals and nutrients Damaged: pollution, overgrowing crops, erosion

10 Wood Renewed: new trees grow from seeds
Uses: art since ancient times, fire since ancient times (cooking and warmth – since at least 500,000 years ago H. erectus); building material for weapons, tools and utensils, and structures since ancient times (first use unknown), MAKING PAPER!!!!!!!!!! Damaged: overuse – using wood faster than trees can grow back, clear-cutting of forests causing too much erosion for trees to grow back (seeds get washed away)

11

12 Quick oral pop quiz!!!! To make sure you were all paying attention!!!!! 1) How can water be renewed? 2) Tell me one use for silver. 3) How can wood be renewed? 4) How can soil be damaged?

13 Closing it up….                 
Tell your SHOULDER PARTNER one renewable resource the Earth gives us and one non-renewable resource the Earth gives us. How can we use BOTH of those resources wisely?????
