1 Horizon 2020 biodiversity-relevant projects and calls
European Commission DG Research and Innovation Marco Fritz CGBN meeting 01/03/18, Brussels All (c) belong to the authors of the used material

2 NBS implementation EU policies
Nature-based solutions: connecting various policies Towards better environmental options and flood management (2009) Water blueprint & natural water retention measures (2012) The EU Adaptation Strategy (2013) The EU Green Infrastructure Strategy (2013) Policy document on NWRM (2014) Towards a research agenda for Nature-based solutions (2014) Sendai framework for DRR (2015) The Urban agenda for the EU (NBS partnership:2017) Accelerating Clean Energy Innovation (2016) and an EU Strategy for Heating and Cooling (2016) Action Plan for Nature, People and the Economy (2017) Horizontally promoted in e.g. cohesion policy ( )

4 EU R&I Policies Implementation H2020 Calls WP 16-17 > EUR 100 mill
SCC : Demonstrating innovative nature-based solutions in cities (water and climate resilience) To provide a robust, EU-wide evidence base and develop a European reference framework on nature-based solutions: projects CONNECTING Nature, GROWGREEN, UNALAB, URBAN GreenUP SCC-03–2016: New governance, business, financing models and economic impact assessment tools for sustainable cities with NBS (urban re-naturing) Enable the systemic integration of NBS into a sustainable urban planning, new governance, business, financing models and partnerships: projects NATURVATION and Nature4Cities SC5-09–2016: Operationalising insurance value of ecosystems Promote the uptake of ecosystem-based approaches for disaster risk reduction and climate change and the exploration of the concept of the insurance value of ecosystems – project NAIAD SC5-10–2016: Multi-stakeholder dialogue platform to promote innovation with nature to address societal challenges Establish science-policy-business-society interfaces to allow for continuous dialogue and interaction – project Think Nature

5 Synergies with and between the different H2020 projects
EC vision to promote, upscale and mainstream NBS Synergies with and between the different H2020 projects Identify the barriers: cultural, technical, legislative and economic Identify the opportunities and solutions Big-scale demonstration projects in cities and territories CONNECTING, URBAN GreenUP, GrowGreen, UNaLab Position NBS as a systemic solution to societal challenges Identification of synergies and of "trade-off". Upscale Common Impact assessment Framework for NBS – V0 developed by EKLIPSE Prove the"Cost-effectiveness" Cost versus benefits of NBS R&I projects assessing NBS economic impact and identifying new governance, business and economic models NATURVATION, Nature4Cities Wide database of comparable data on NBS benefits and impacts in different contexts (geo- hydro- climatic) Sustainable data platforms and repository with comparable data – incl. on the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of NBS Develop a global market for NBS increasing demand and diversifying supply for NBS NBS portfolio of projects synergies Ecosystem based approaches: ecosystem based adaptation, ecosystem based disaster risk reduction, natural water retention measures, green infrastructure Ecosystem services are the benefits that people obtain from ecosystems. They are the direct and indirect contributions of ecosystems to human well-being. Nature-based solutions will restore, enhance and promote ecosystem services – with simultaneous economic, social and environmental benefits. Ecosystem Services worked well as a concept to mobilise scientists, but often failed in mobilising stakeholders and building positive relationships between humans and the world (as it describes the problem but does not give a solution). NBS could be attractive as it presents the applied way of working with ecosystem services. But there is a lack of mobilisation for some disciplines, e.g. ecology. Real need to work on how to promote inter and trans-disciplinarity (need to think of process on how to call and implement new knowledge generation). Multi stakeholders platform to deploy NBS in Europe: THINK NATURE Disseminate Innovate with new financing and insurance models: natural capital R&I on insurance value : NAIAD

6 EU R&I Policies Implementation H2020 Calls WP 2017
NBS related topics in 2017 SC : Large scale demonstrators on nature-based solutions for hydro meteorological risk reduction Indicative budget: €29M (3 projects) replicate, EU-wide monitoring reference, viability, large-scale deployment, community. SCC-02– : Demonstrating innovative nature-based solutions in cities – Inclusive Urban regeneration Indicative budget: €44M (4 projects) test to what extent nature-based solutions can reduce crime and security costs, and enhance human health, wellbeing and social cohesion. SC Need of obtaining proof-of concept to support upscaling and replication of NBS for hydro-meteorological risk reduction ( including regeneration of deprived districts or neglected, abandoned areas. Should also test extent to which NBS can reduce crime and security costs and enhance human health, well-being and social cohesion. Adopt a "Front runner" and "follower cities" approach Develop, deploy and demonstrate NBS NBS co-designed, co-developed and co-implemented Assist follower cities and develop and Sustainable Urban Plan as a result of the replication. Engage Fll.Cities in networking and knowledge exchange Set up a robust monitoring scheme ( min 2 years) Develop methodologies to assess the NBS against other measures and replication+ upscaling Identify barriers Establish a long-term sustainable data platform.
