5 Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro became dictator of Cuba after leading a revolution The U.S. responded by setting an embargo on all trades with Cuba Castro turned to the Soviets for economic and military aid – Cuba becomes communist. Led a guerrilla movement with Che Guevara against Fulgencio Bautista, a Cuban dictator. Had US support b/c Batista was corrupt, Castro viewed as freedom fighter. Took control of oil refineries (Esso, Shell, etc.) and lands controlled by American sugar companies (owned 75% of Cuban crop lands) Why would the relationship between the US & Cuba change?

Central Historical Question : Why did the Russians pull their missiles out of Cuba? In 1959, Cuba became a Communist country, led by Fidel Castro. This development brought the Cold War close to home because Cuba is 90 miles off the coast of Florida John F. Kennedy was elected president in 1960 and oversaw two major events that involved Cuba: 1) the Bay of Pigs invasion; 2) the Cuban Missile Crisis. Bay of Pigs: Bahia de Cochinos, U.S. mission to send Cuban exiles to invade Cuban, failed. Eisenhower approved CIA training for mission JFK approved mission. 1,400 Cuban exiles landed , faced 20, 000 Cuban troops.
