1 Color Theory Notes What is a Theory?

2 Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet.
Color and White Light White light passes through a prism and emits 7 waves of light called the spectrum. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet. (ROY G BIV)

3 White light shines on an object The object absorbs some of the light.
The rest of the light is reflected off of the object and to your eye The Amazing World of Color

4 Clear is NOT a color! Clear does not contain pigment and light passes through it. Pigment is not transparent!

5 This is how we see color on tinted windows and yet still see through them.

6 Color Wheel A. Primary colors- are colors that are not mixed.
Red, Yellow and Blue B. Secondary colors- are made by mixing 2 primary colors. Orange, Violet, and Green C. Tertiary colors- are made by mixing one primary color with one secondary color. Yellow-green, Yellow-orange, Red-orange, Red-violet, Blue-violet and Blue-green

7 Color Combinations A. Complimentary colors- are across from one another on the color wheel. Ex. Red and green B. Analogous colors are neighbors on the color wheel. Ex. Blue-green, green and blue Analogous Rules 1. Next to one another on the color wheel 2. Must have 1 color in common colors C. Warm and cool colors. Warm= reds Cool= blues

9 Tint: adding white to a color. Shade: adding black to a color.
Neutrals: black, gray and white. Tone: Adding grey to a color.

10 Painted Boxes Process of Creation
Separate your paper into 6 sections Lightly label your boxes like you see on the left. On the back, write your name, hour and grade in the center and circle it. On the front draw either one large picture or design or a different picture/design for each box. Choose your colors for your Color Combos and label them on back Get your drawing ok’d Paint Complimentary 2 Analogous 3 or 4 Cool All 6 Warm All 6 Tints 3 Shades 3
