Continental margin This is the area between a continent and the ocean basin floor that is closest to it. In the Atlantic this area has little disturbed and has very little earthquake or volcanic activity. In the Pacific however, the ocean crust is plunging below continental crust causing a subduction zone. Here there is a narrow continental margin and a variety of earthquakes and volcanoes.

Continental shelf This portion is a gradual slope that extends from the shoreline Submerged surface

Continental slope This marks the edge of the shelf and is a steeper slope downwards.

Submarine canyon Steep-sided valleys that are deep and cut into the continental slope.

Turbidity current These are movements of dense sediment rich water that are coming down the continental slopes.

Continental rise Occur where trenches do not.
Where the continental slope merges into a gradual incline.

Ocean basin floor This comprises of 30% of the earths surface
This part of the floor is very flat

Abyssal plain Deep extremely flat areas of the ocean floor.

Seamount These are volcanic peaks that are submerged under water.

Midocean ridge These are found near the center most parts of most of the ocean basins. Under water mountains

Seafloor spreading Happening at divergent plate boundaries and allow magma to rise
