1 Number Lines Presented by Ruth Harbin Miles Creative Mathematics
Include self introductions

2 Let’s Get Acquainted with Just Like Me
Kindergarten Teacher 1st Grade 2nd Grade 3rd Grade 4th Grade 5th Grade Mathematics Coach School Principal Special Ed or Title 1 Teacher Again…So glad you are all here….

3 The handout for this session is posted at www.creativemathematics.com
It can be found under free PDFs.

4 Our Focus… Use the number line for teaching and reinforcing important math concepts and skills.

5 A number line… Helps students make sense of the mathematics they are learning. It is a visual tool every teacher and ever classroom needs!

6 Math is not taught in a year!

7 Number Lines Can Be Used for:
Counting Patterning Regrouping Making change Fractions Elapsed time Factoring Assessment

8 Our brains like graphics and pictures and love organization.
Brain Based Research Our brains like graphics and pictures and love organization. So…the # 1 most important visual at the elementary level is…

9 Let’s Make a Number Line!
Number Line Master, scissors, tape Color of Multiples: 2- red – green – orange 5 – yellow – light blue neon orange 8 – neon green – black navy blue Whistle While you Work – Students perform to the tempo

11 Counting Include self introductions

12 All of mathematics is based on patterns.
There are 2 types of patterns: repeating and growing

13 Growing patterns are also called…
Growth or additive patterns

14 The number line is the first growth pattern children learn about.
For example…starting at 1, then adding 1 more, = 2, add one more = 3, etc. (additive pattern).

15 Let’s Count Using the Number Line
Use the petite number line. Point with your finger as we count by ones to thirty. Point as we count backwards. (rehearse = rehearing)

16 Let’s sing a counting song!
Use the songs to help students recall important concepts. Does not matter if you can sing…

17 Imprints an instructional message 90% faster than any other strategy
Music… Imprints an instructional message 90% faster than any other strategy Bottom line…students remember lyrics 30 years later.

18 We’re Counting by Twos

19 Let’s Count By Fives

20 10s Lift Off

21 Count by Threes

22 Empty Number Lines Include self introductions

23 Empty Number Lines Activity
Planting numbers with Adding Machine Tape Label 0 – 100 Fold in half to label 50 Next put multiples of 10 on the tape Use the PV ones and tens dice. Write the numbers on the number line. Music will play, when the song is over, stop. Circle the numbers you recorded. Count how many.

24 Rounding…

25 Alternative Algorithms for Making Change
Problem: I bought candy for 57¢. I gave the clerk $ How much change do I get back?

26 Alternative Algorithms for Making Change
Problem: I bought candy for 57¢. I gave the clerk $ How much change do I get back?

27 Elapsed Time 5:35 - 3:47 1.88 minutes????
Johnny gets home from school at 3:47 p.m. He has until 5:35 to do his homework. How much time does he have? 5:35 - 3:47 1.88 minutes????

28 Alternative Algorithms for Adding and Subtracting
Empty number lines for sense making. The step down method (one less) for subtraction. 2, 0 0 0

29 Fractions… Using an empty number line….label the point of origin on the left and 1 on the right. Fold in ½ and label ½. Repeat the folding and fold the ½ in one half to divide into 4 equal parts. Continue showing the label and equivalence of fractions. Repeat to show eighths and sixteenths.

30 Children’s Literature Books for Number Lines…
