1 Accessible PDF Quick Tips
For CV and Syllabuses

2 Documents Goal Create accessible documents
Accessible = a screen reading device can read the syllabus in its entirety with correctly identified reading order, headings, subheadings, tables and lists, etc. and sighted students can easily read and understand the content. Accessibility before accommodation

3 Modifying Styles Don’t have to use pre-set styles in Word.

4 Text Styling 12 point font minimum
All bold and italics should be done with styles No underlining

5 Use San Serif Fonts

6 Serif Fonts are more difficult to read

7 Descriptive Links Don’t write “Click Here,” “Read More,” “Start Now,” etc. Link text should describe where the link takes you. Ex:

8 Tables Don’t use complex tables with merged or split cells
Screen reader doesn’t know how to handle it

9 Tables Don’t use tables if you don’t need them.

10 Tables Don’t use tables for design purposes
You’ll have to do a lot of manual work to set the reading order.

11 Tables Don’t use tabs to create content that should be in a table.
