1 Moving Decimals By: Mary S. Roland

2 What is the Value? A decimal is a number that uses place value and a decimal to show value less than a whole (or one). A fraction does the same thing. So fractions and decimals mean the same thing. They are just written a little differently.

3 Moving Decimals Multiply by Move the Decimal Point Example 10
1 place to the right 10 x 5.17 =51.7 100 2 places to the right 100 x 5.17=517 1000 3 places to the right 1000 x 5.17= 5,170

4 Notice: The whole is divided into tenths
Color eight out of ten Notice: The whole is divided into tenths Fraction 8/10 to Decimal 0.8 Top of the fraction = write the parts (shaded/unshaded) read the questions carefully Bottom of the fraction = write the whole (all of the pieces in the picture).

5 Notice: The whole is divided into tenths
Color five out of ten Notice: The whole is divided into tenths Fraction 5/10 to Decimal 0.5 Top of the fraction = write the parts (shaded/unshaded) read the questions carefully Bottom of the fraction = write the whole (all of the pieces in the picture).

6 Notice: The whole is divided into tenths
Color one out of ten Notice: The whole is divided into tenths Fraction 1/10 to Decimal 0.1 Top of the fraction = write the parts (shaded/unshaded) read the questions carefully Bottom of the fraction = write the whole (all of the pieces in the picture).

7 Notice: The whole is divided into tenths
Color six out of ten Notice: The whole is divided into tenths Fraction 6/10 to Decimal 0.6 Top of the fraction = write the parts (shaded/unshaded) read the questions carefully Bottom of the fraction = write the whole (all of the pieces in the picture).

8 Color sixty out of a hundred
Notice: The whole is divided into hundredths Fraction 60/100 to Decimal 0.60 Top of the fraction = write the parts (shaded/unshaded) read the questions carefully Bottom of the fraction = write the whole (all of the pieces in the picture).

9 Color four out of a hundred
Notice: The whole is divided into hundredths Fraction 4/100 to Decimal 0.04 Top of the fraction = write the parts (shaded/unshaded) read the questions carefully Bottom of the fraction = write the whole (all of the pieces in the picture).

10 Color eleven out of a hundred
Notice: The whole is divided into hundredths Fraction 11/100 to Decimal 0.11 Top of the fraction = write the parts (shaded/unshaded) read the questions carefully Bottom of the fraction = write the whole (all of the pieces in the picture).

11 Something to think about…
Write a fraction as a decimal 1/10 7/10 8/10 29/100 4/100 0.1 0.7 0.8 0.29 0.04 Hint: Move the decimal based on the number of zeros

12 Something to think about…
Which fraction has the same value as 0.4? 20/50 4/100 4/10 4/5

13 Yes, both fractions are represented by 0.5 or .5
Writing to Explain Since 50/100 and ½ are equivalent, are the decimals for each fraction equivalent? Yes No They are both equal. Yes, both fractions are represented by 0.5 or .5
