1 Objective: Evaluate & Simplify expressions containing zero and integer exponents.

2 x4 BASE EXPONENT Definition:
An exponent tells us how many times the BASE is being MULTIPLIED by ITSELF! Example:

3 Anything to the zero power equals 1!
Zero Exponents Exploration: Use your calculator to answer the following questions – Rule: ____________________________________________ Application: 1 1 1 Anything to the zero power equals 1! 1 1 32

4 Zero Exponents Continued
EXCEPTION TO THE RULE Exploration: Use your calculator to answer the following questions – Rule: ____________________________________________________ error error error 00 and 0 raised to a negative power are both undefined.

5 Negative exponents are BAD!
***If you have a negative exponent in a problem you must get rid of it.

6 Let’s explore negative exponents.
Use your calculator to find: = 8 = 16 𝟏 𝟖 𝟏 𝟏𝟔 −3 = −2 =

7 Negative exponents become a fraction.
1 goes on top, positive exponent on the bottom. Summary: ___________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ For example: 𝟐 −𝟑 is the same thing as: 𝟏 𝟐 𝟑

8 What if it was backwards?
Use your calculator to find: 216 = = 25 −3 = −2 = 216 25

9 Summary: If a negative exponent is on the bottom of a fraction it comes to the top and becomes positive.

10 To get rid of a negative exponent:
If you have variables instead of numbers you must remember the rule (because you cannot put variables into your calculator!) To get rid of a negative exponent: Move the exponent to the opposite side of the fraction. If on the top → move to the bottom. If on the bottom → move to the top. Make the exponent positive.

11 If you just have numbers you can use your calculator!
That is okay!

12 2–4 5–3 (–5)–4 4–3

13 𝟏 𝟏𝟎,𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟎 –4 6. (-2)–5 7. 70 8. 9-1 −𝟏 𝟑𝟐 𝟏 𝟏 𝟗

14 Simplify the expression.
𝟏 𝒙 𝟒 12. 13. 𝟏 𝒄 𝟕 9. 10. 11. 𝟏 𝒔 𝟖 𝒙 𝟑 𝟓𝒙 𝟐

15 Simplify the expression.
16. 17. 14. 15. 2r0m–3

16 7-1 20. 21. 18. 19. 𝟏 𝒙 𝟑 𝒛 𝟓 𝟑 𝒚 𝟐

17 24. p–3 for p = 4 7-1 Evaluate means “PLUG IN!” (with parenthesis!!)
Evaluate the expression for the given value of the variables. 7-1 Evaluate means “PLUG IN!” (with parenthesis!!) x–2 for x = 4 –2a0b-4 for a = 5 and b = –3 p–3 for p = 4

18 1 Review from Yesterday Anything to the zero power equals…..
What do you do with negative exponents? Evaluate means??? 1 Flip them! Top → Bot Bot → Top Then make positive! PLUG IN with PARENTHESIS!!

19 7.1 Practice #1

20 7.1 Practice #1

21 Numbers 13 & 14 do not have answers on the right.
Find your own answers!!
