1 Notes Science SPI 0807.5.2 Adaptations
Learning Intention: Examine structural and behavioral adaptations in organisms/species. Purpose: to understand how organisms adjust their bodies and their actions to survive and thrive. Success Criteria: I will show that I understand this by passing the quiz with an 85 or higher. I Can Statement: By the end of this unit I will be able to say... ...I can explain two ways that organisms adapt to their environments.

2 Definition: To adapt means to change in order to survive and/or thrive in a specific environment.
Two types of adaptations: 1) Behavioral: 2) Structural: what an organism does concerns the shape and form of the body Question: See the insects in the picture below? Can you see them? Is this mainly behavioral or structural adaptation? This is called camouflage This is mainly structural adaptation because these insects have adapted by developing bodies that look like thorns.

3 Two types of adaptations: 1) Behavioral- what an organism does
2) Structural- concerns the shape and form of the body Look at the image of the hibernating bear Question: Is this a mainly a behavioral or structural adaptation? This is behavioral because it is an action that the animal does.

4 Two Key Behavioral Adaptations requires 2 parents (male and female)
1) Sexual Reproduction: requires 2 parents (male and female) Advantage: Genetic diversity which results in greater adaptability Disadvantage: Large amount of time and effort to find a mate Advantage: No time and effort needed to find a mate Disadvantage: Lack of genetic diversity which results in less adaptability 2) Asexual Reproduction: requires only 1 parent Reproduces sexually Dogs Hydra Reproduces asexually

5 …diversity in offspring from genetic mutations.
SPI Adaptations Notes Science 1) When environmental changes occur… …organisms must change (adapt) by either changing their behavior or changing their body structure or both. 2) The process that drives this… … is called natural selection. 3) Changes and variations in populations result from… …diversity in offspring from sexual reproduction. 4) Changes and variations also result from… …diversity in offspring from genetic mutations.

6 Watch a video about structural & behavioral adaptations
Video Link (1 min 25 sec): Adaptations of Predators and Prey Afterwards, discuss one structural & one behavioral adaptation… Also describe the habitat for each of these organisms. Also explain how these adaptations help these animals survive in their habitats. …of lions …of zebras …of cobras …of tigers Habitat: the natural home or environment of an animal, plant, or other kind of organism.

7 Watch another video about structural & behavioral adaptations
Video Link (2 min 30 sec): Camel Adaptations Song-Video Afterwards, discuss 3 structural & 3 behavioral adaptations… …of camels Also describe camels’ habitats, and explain how these adaptations help camels survive there. What would happen if you placed a camel in rainforest or artic habitat?
