1. Cain offered fruit of the ground. “Without the shedding of blood there is no remission (of sin).” (Hebrews 9:22) 2. Abel offered a lamb. Type of Christ, the Lamb of God

1. Passover redeems Israel (Exodus 12) 2. Prophecy of Christ’s sacrifice “…he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter…” (Isaiah 53:7) 3. John’s recognition of Jesus as the sacrifice “Behold the lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29)

I. The Cross in God’s Eternal Plan 1. It was the eternal purpose of God to save fallen man. “…when the fulness of time was come…” (Gal. 4:4) 2. Jesus was the planned sacrifice. “…the lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” (Rev. 13:8)

3. Jesus came to bear witness of the Father. “…he that hath seen me hath seen the father.” (Jn. 14:9) 4. Christ’s death on the cross was the means of salvation. “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.” (Jn. 12:32)

5. The Cross is evidence of God’s love. “For God so loved the world…” (John 3:16) “God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Rom. 5:8) 6. Christ’s triumph over death inspires believers to come to Christ and God.

II. The Cross Made Sinners Aware of Sin And Its Consequences. 1. Sin was nailed to the cross. 2. The message of the cross: “You have sinned.” (Acts 2:37) 3. The response of penitent sinners is: “I have sinned.” (Luke 15:21)

III. The Cross Causes Penitent Sinners to Seek Salvation. 1. Awareness of sin is the first step to salvation. (Acts 2:37) 2. The crucified and resurrected Jesus says: “Come unto me…” (Matt. 11:28)

IV. The Preaching of the Cross Makes Truth Available to Sinners. 1. Christ reconciled the world to God through the cross. (Col. 1:20-23) 2. The Old Law was nailed to the Cross (Col 2:14) 3. Through the Gospel, God has provided reconciling truth. (John 8:32) 4. God’s Providence brings the Gospel to sinners through preaching. (Eph. 3:8)

V. The Preaching of the Cross Saves From Sin. 1. Those who obey the Gospel are free from the condemnation of sin (Rom. 8:1) 2. The redeemed remain saved as long as they walk in the light. (1 John 1:7)

VII. To Be Saved By the Cross Requires Sacrifice and Commitment. 1. We must bear the cross of Christ. (Luke 9:23) 2. We must be crucified with Christ. (Gal. 2:20)

37 The Church and God’s Providence
1. Church (ecclesia) means “called out.” 2. God has in every age had followers who were “called out” from the rest of the world. “Choose you this day whom ye will serve…” (Joshua 24:15) Believers are predestined to be God’s children. (Eph. 1:5) 3. The number of believers has always been comparatively small. (Matt. 7:13,14)

4. God’s providence in regard to the church is seen in: The pattern in the OT Tabernacle. The “church in the wilderness.” (Acts 7:38) The temple in Jerusalem. The NT church. Preservation of the church in every age. The restoration movement. The deliverance of the church to God.

1. When the fullness of time came, God established the Church according to His Eternal Purpose. (Gal 4:4) 2. Those who obeyed God were added to the Church according to His Eternal Plan. (Acts 2:39, 47) 3. God continues to save those who are subjects of His Eternal Plan. (Acts 2:39)

46 VI. The Church in Perpetuity (Acts 2:39; Luke 8:11)
1. When proper seed is sown, God brings forth fruit according to His Eternal Purpose. (Luke 8:11-15) 2. The Church is to last forever. (Dan. 2:44) 3. God is to be glorified in the Church “throughout all ages.” (Eph. 3:20-21) 4. Christ will be with His Church until the end of the world. (Matt. 28:20) 5. Christ will deliver the Kingdom to the Father. (1 Cor. 15:24).

47 God’s Eternal Purpose “Who [God, the Father] has (1) saved us AND (2) called us to a holy life - not because of anything we have done but because of His own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” (2 Timothy 1:9-10)
