2 Galatians 6:1-5

3 Week 12 Restoration of a Sinner (Galatians 6:1-5)

4 Galatians 6:1 | Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. | Focus on the Believer – not the unbeliever | The Inevitability of Sin in the Christian’s life

5 Matthew 18:5-7 | “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.” As Christians we have an obligation and a responsibility to address destructive and un-repented of sin we may come to see in each other’s lives.

6 Galatians 6:1 | Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. | Focus on the Believer – not the unbeliever | The Inevitability of Sin in the Christian’s life | Caught – Premediated or caught by surprise

7 Galatians 6:1 | Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. | ‘Pneumatics’ - ALL true believers have the Holy Spirit | No Option to Ignore

8 Galatians 6:1 | Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. | Focus is restoration – not punishment | John 8 – Woman Caught in Adultery Jesus focused on GRACE and RESTORATION Rather than JUSTICE

9 Shooting the Wounded in the Church
| Focus is on Justice and not Grace | Restoration can be messy | Fear of sin impacting others in the church James 5: My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

10 | ‘Spirit of Gentleness’ (NASB)
Galatians 6:1 | Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. | ‘Spirit of Gentleness’ (NASB) | Galatians had problems with being ‘gentle’ Galatians 5:15 – ‘Biting and devouring each other’ Galatians 5:26 – ‘Provoking and envying each other’ Ephesians 4:2 - Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

11 Mature Christians know their weaknesses and don’t play with fire!
Galatians 6:1 | Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. | (1) Sin of Self-Righteousness (Pharisees) | (2) Falling Prey to the Same Sin 1 Corinthians 10:12 – So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! Mature Christians know their weaknesses and don’t play with fire!

12 Galatians 6:2 | Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. | Paul Quotes Socrates – “One must share one’s burdens with one’s friends, for possibly we may do something to ease you.” | Law of Christ Galatians 5:  You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Carrying each other’s burdens means we come alongside our brother or sister in Christ when we see sin controlling and hurting them.

13 Principles from Galatians 6:1-2
Use wisdom Check your motives and your heart Are you able to help without sinning? Restoration is the goal – not justice If needed get help from mature believers Do everything with love and gentleness

14 James 5:19-20 My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
