1 Reading/Workshop Session 1: Habits of Document Analysis (HDA)
A way to analyze readings (documents)

2 Preamble to get us started…
Describe what your experience analyzing readings/documents has been like here on campus… What are the positive experiences? What have been the challenges? How do you know that your analysis has been effective? Preamble to get us started…

3 Habits of Document Analysis (HDA)
Explanation why we’re using this method In order to conduct more effective analysis of readings- you need effective methods This requires you follow some steps and know the steps This will allow you to use your readings/documents analysis in your eventual writing Habits of Document Analysis (HDA)

4 7 Habits of Document Analysis
Prep the Document Prepping the document means rewriting the question at the top of each document. Paraphrasing is encouraged Source the Document Annotate the “Source” to consider bias, audience, and purpose for the document’s creation. This allows you to ID tone and credibility. Note the Note Tap into prior knowledge and place the document in its historical context. Backdrop the Document Back-dropping means to write down relevant outside information they may have about the document. Connect the document to what you already learned. These steps need to be followed (in sequence) in our approach to the DBQ. We will be reviewing steps 4 and 6 in today’s PD. The videos we are viewing today show classes in which these steps have been followed, but we are highlighting step 4. GDCAP: These steps can also be followed with the DBQs in the GDCAP- they are part of the context of an entire unit, so these steps can and should be included within the unit.

5 7 Habits of Document Analysis
Closely Read Read the text to identify its main message, important phrases to potentially use as evidence, as well as identify confusing words and phrases. Rereading is encouraged Determine what is important (Main Idea) Determining what is important puts emphasis on the annotation. Understand main message, areas of confusion, and phrases to cite as evidence in your writing. Use the Document to answer the Question Finally, students should be able to answer the questions beneath the document to show understanding of its content and message. These questions often guide students to use the document to answer the essay question and citing the document is encouraged. Note- For today, we are only really focusing on steps 1 -6 These steps need to be followed (in sequence) in our approach to the DBQ.

6 Flow Chart for HDA Prep the Document Source the Document Note the Note
Backdrop the Document Closely Read Determine the Main Idea Pause after this slide to respond to Document A#6. Share out if time. This whole process involves following ALL the steps (As you get more comfy, you may be able to collapse steps Use the Document(s) to Answer the Question

7 The DBQ Process as Practice
We are going to dive into the DBQ (Document Based Question) process (Quincy & LaFrance) Take a look at your packet and the front page gives you the question we are focusing on This is the theme of the entire course- The Concept is Tyranny In the next slide you will see some scenarios about possible Tyranny… with your partner you will examine scenarios and decide if it is tyranny and possible STRUCTURES to potentially prevent the action

8 Tyranny Scenarios Scenario #1: 8 different states pass laws legalizing the recreational use of marijuana. Washington D.C. declares the use of marijuana to be illegal in all 50 states. This could be a problem because… Scenario #2: POTUS declares that federal program called DACA- (undocumented children do not get deported) is no longer valid and terminates it. Scenario #3: POTUS ignores an order by the Supreme Court declaring that his policy on a travel ban on Muslim immigrants from certain countries is illegal and cannot be enforced.

9 Defining Tyranny With your SW partner, read the Background Essay on how the Constitution was designed and the history behind it. Your #goal with your partner is the following: To understand what the background is on how and why the Constitution was even created to start with How does James Madison define what Tyranny is Take the next 10 mins to read with your partner- annotate, highlight etc Bringing this out to the floor…

10 Understanding the Question
Take a look at your packet.. With your partner, take a look at the three questions… What is the analytical question asked? What terms need to be defined? Rewrite the question in your own words Take 5-6 mins with partner to complete these questions… Bringing this out to the floor… Are we all comfortable with this question?

11 Pre Bucketing This is a stage in the process to help you better understand where you will be placing evidence in your eventual response With your partner, follow the instructions in packet and practice this process- PreBucketing… Bringing this out to the floor…

12 HDA DBQ Steps Workshop…
With your new SW Crew Partner… Step 1: Follow the HDA Steps to engage the readings Step 2: See if you have already been following the steps in your annotations…make adjustments as needed You are using Thinking Logs (DBQ Analysis Sheets)to keep track of evidence and thinking as you discuss Step 3: Make sure you have for each reading all the parts to the HDA and DBQ analysis Sheets Complete Start with Document A HDA DBQ Steps Workshop…

13 Debrief of HDA Half Sheet of Paper for Me to Review…
Was this a useful process? What worked? What could be adjusted for the other documents next session? Did you come out of this with a better understanding of the reading? Explain your answer Debrief of HDA
