1 Six Kingdoms of Life

2 Classification into a Kingdom is based on certain criteria…
1. Number of Cells (Uni-cellular or Multi-cellular) How it obtains ENERGY (Autotroph or Heterotroph) Type of Cell (Eukaryotic or Prokaryotic)

3 Number of Cells Unicellular: Made of ONE cell
Multicellular: Made of MANY cells

4 How it obtains ENERGY Autotroph: Makes it own food for energy
Heterotroph: Consumes food for energy

5 Type of Cell Prokaryote: DNA is free flowing in the cell (NO NUCLEUS)
Eukaryote: DNA is packaged in a membrane bound Nucleus

6 Six Kingdoms Archaebacteria (prokaryotes) Eubacteria (prokaryotes)
Protists Fungi Plants Animals

7 Kingdom Archaebacteria
Oldest form of life ARCHAE = Ancient bacteria Unicellular (Single cell organism) Prokaryotes (do not have a nucleus) Can be Autotrophs or Heterotrophs

8 Archaebacteria Found in extreme harsh environments *Geysers
*Hotsprings *Volcanic ocean vents

9 Kingdom Eubacteria Second oldest form of life Eu = True bacteria
Unicellular (Single cell organism) Prokaryote (do not have a nucleus) Autotroph or Heterotroph

10 Eubacteria Most familiar/common bacteria *Streptococcus *Lactobacillus
*Staphylococcus

11 Kingdom Protista “Odds and Ends” kingdom
All microscopic organisms that are not plants, not animal, not bacteria, and not fungi. Unicellular (Single cell organism) Heterotroph or Autotroph Eukaryote (have a nucleus)

12 Protista Most live in water! EX: Algae, Amoeba, Paramecium, Euglena

13 Kingdom Fungae Most are Multi-cellular organisms
Heterotrophic (mainly decomposers) Eukaryote (Have a nucleus)

14 Fungae Mold Mildew Mushrooms Some cause diseases *ringworm
*athlete’s foot

15 Kingdom Plantae Second largest kingdom Multi-cellular organisms
Autotrophs *Producers (make their own food) Without plants life as we know it would not exist. Eukaryotic

16 Kingdom Plantae

17 Kingdom Animalia Multicellular Heterotrophic
(Consumer – Must eat for energy) Eukaryotic

18 Kingdom Animalia

19 Three Domain System  Recently, scientists have added a group above Kingdom.  Three groups, called DOMAINS, contain each of the six kingdoms. Domain Eukarya - includes organisms composed of eukaryotic cells (plants, animals, fungi, protists) Domain Bacteria - includes all prokaryotic cells, Kingdom Eubacteria Domain Archaea - includes only "ancient" bacteria, Archaebacteria
