Enterprise Lexicon Services: AV-2 PES Tiger Team
W. Jacob Satterfield AF C2 Integration Center (AFC2IC) Requirements and Integration: Interoperability & Standards (RIIS) 1 Sept 2010

Purpose To review the DoDAF v2.0 PES for the AV-2 Integrated Dictionary View, and suggest an optimized exchange specification for vocabulary information. The 1 Sept 2010 meeting serves as a kickoff of discussions.

Background Enterprise Lexicon Services effort has advocated the need for a capability to share common vocabulary between Enterprise Architecture (EA) products. Synergy between EA tools, analysis tools, metadata management constructs, and run-time software is dependent on machine-sharing of data. Common lexicons are foundational to higher-order interoperability and federation of systems. The authoritative DoDAF v2.0 Data Model includes a Physical Exchange Specification (PES), including the AV-2 Integrated Dictionary, formatted in XML Schema. Non EA-domain tools built on other standard domain models (ebXML, RDF, etc) may not be able to easily leverage the AV-2 specification as-is.

EA Data Exchange Partners

Constraints Maximize accessibility and understandability of the AV-2 physical exchange specification. Model agnostic, purposed to Vocabulary exchange. Leverage DDMS and IC-ISM per DoD direction where possible. Maintain low cost of implementation. A majority of software consumers will implement via Web Services, hence XML Schema will be the near-term target grammar for describing the AV-2 data. Stay aware of SKOS, OWL, RDF/XML industry methods of vocabulary capture, but not necessarily as near-term solution for exchanges. Win condition: Demonstration of vocabulary exchange between two or more tools, using an updated AV-2 exchange specification.

1-Sept-2010 Attendees Jacob Satterfield – AFC2IC (Host) Cindy Luis – AFC2IC (ELS-USAF OneSource Liaison) Brant Wills – AFC2IC (OneSource Developer) Fatma Dandashi - SAF/XCPAB Howard Kern – DoD CIO – FAC Dave McDaniel – DoD CIO Shelton Lee – DoD CIO David Brock – MIT (M-Language Lead)

1-Sept-2010 Notes Authoritative source for latest DoDAF spec is at: DM2 PES was developed from a perspective of holistic exchange of an entire architecture, rather than optimized for a specific individual view product (like the AV-2). Some effort to express AV-2 data as RDF/OWL is underway. An XML Schema spec. would still be valuable. Industry Advisory Council – Enterprise Architecture Special Interest Group (IAC-EA SIG) may be doing related work. Configuration Management is through DoD CIO, with updates every six months. CCB can be contacted through

1-Sept-2010 Actions Tiger team to review the current logical specification of the AV-2 for accuracy: Tiger team be become familiar with the AV-2 Best Practices document: Next meeting will be 6-Oct-2010.
