Journal For Quality & Participation, 33(1), So what is racial diversity……..Racial Diversity is simply a variety of different ethnicities *Quote from an article -”Learning to understand and embrace the ideas and practices of customers and employees who think and act differently than we do is not easy, but it is the hallmark of successful 21st century leaders” *Workplace diversity in America is important because the normal workplace dynamics are changing. In the workforce, there is a rise of many several people from many different backgrounds and cultures that are being brought together due to globalization, the people in the workplace have to learn to work together.

Globalization *Within the 21st century, Globalization has changed the dynamic of the U.S. *Immigration - Foreigners have moved into the U.S. and joined the workforce causing many different ethnicities, that may not have worked together in prior years, to interact and learn to work together *Previously, companies were run by the “good ole boys”/middle-aged Caucasians males. Caucasians are the majority; however, the gap is closing at a steady pace. *Because customers & consumers are changing, it is important to use all the knowledge of a diverse group in business to offer a more expansive product or service

Boston: Pearson. *Coca-Cola Company is the world’s #1 sparkling beverage company that is based in Atlanta, GA *It’s had many issues with race; mainly African Americans *Complaints– 1995, only African American executive complained about lack of African Americans in upper management & was humiliated, ignored, overlooked, or unacknowledged *Lawsuits four employees filed lawsuit, ultimately grew to 2200 current & former employees *Coca-Cola was charged with paying AA lower salaries & not promoting qualified AA employees *HR blamed for preventing employees from having a fair chance of applying for certain positions by giving managers undue discretion *Case was $192.5 million in Nov 2000 *Also ordered to pay $36 million – Hire a task force to make changes within -post jobs that attract 3 candidates including women & minorities -managers & employees take mandatory diversity training -establish uniformed compensation system (give example – Jack $50K & Ramone $25K work production line

The Impact of Racial Diversity on the American Workplace of the 21st Century Companies and Diversity: FIS Corporation How FIS Got There Positive Reinforcement Junior Achievement *FIS Corp. is a financial & technology company & they are very diverse *How FIS got there – FIS is a global company made up of several acquired companies that has outsourced many of its departments to countries such as India, Europe, & Puerto Rico. *Many employees from other countries are brought to the US to train and meet American employees that they work with on a daily basis. This gives coworkers a sense of humanness *Positive Reinforcement – all managers and employees take mandatory diversity training yearly. Occasionally there are face to face classes such as conflict resolution helping the staff learn to handle conflict professionally. Alters the thinking of different cultures and conflict *Diversity Programs – Junior achievement to help train the future workforce in technology and financial systems
