Finding Your Way in IEEE or… What is the SFBA Council? or What did I get myself into? Bill DeHope OEB Past Chair January 25, 2014 Michaels Restaurant Shoreline Drive and Amphitheater Mountain View, CA 2014 Tri-Section Officer Training Workshop
Not powerful enough to take you where you want to go? Does IEEE look a little mysterious? Maybe even a little foreign?
What is the IEEE? The Worlds largest (>400,000) technical professional society >800 active standards; >100 periodicals; >300 conferences/year; responsible for 30% of the worlds knowledge Our charter: Scientific advancement and diffusion of knowledge Advancement of the profession (our careers) Use skills to enhance the quality of life for all people Our strengths: Peer-reviewed Transactions, practical publications, newsletters International conferences & workshops, published proceedings 40 active technical Societies & 6 Technical Councils 1500 chapters in 307 sections; grassroots member involvement Professional advancement, support; networking; career benefits Local You are part of something big. Welcome!
What are the IEEEs entities? (Finding yourself in the alphabet soup) Societies –Communications, Computer, NPSS, etc –Active at the national level (journals, conferences) –Active at the local level (chapters) Geographic entities –Regions, Areas, Sections, Councils, Chapters (Student) Branches –Berkeley, Stanford, etc –Can have technical chapters National entities –PACE, IEEE-USA, TISP, etc. Affinity Groups –GOLD, WiE, Consultants Network, Life Members
Who is the IEEE? See why chapters are the of IEEE? But how can they be in 3 places at once? TAB MGA (RAB)
The to understanding IEEE organization: $ Viewed Geographically The Regional Activities Board (Now Member & Geographic Activities Board) $ Viewed Technically The Technical Activities Board But what is a Council?
What is an IEEE Council? An optional collaboration of contiguous sections The San Francisco Bay Area Council consists of: –Santa Clara Valley Section –Oakland/East Bay Section –San Francisco Section Council Viewed Geographically Council Viewed Administratively $
What does your Council do? Provide a vehicle for services aided by section interaction –When more is merrier –When the extra mile is worth it –Like this Officer Training Event –Like tri-section summer banquets or BBQ Coordinate communications –The Online Grid –Enhance Region ties Tri-section Events –Officer Training; sharing of Best Practices –Sponsor Sections Congress, GHTC13 ! –PACE activities, consultants network –affinity groups: WiE, GOLD ! Provide shared resources –in the past, an office & secretary –Now, ideas and volunteers
A little about SFBAC & money… Rules –Councils cash-on-hand < 1 * Yearly Budget (directed by MOU) –Chapters cash-on-hand < * Yearly Budget (my rule of thumb) –Audits if any entitys cash-on-hand > 100 k$ (IEEEs rule) RAB/ MGA $5/member 70,20,10k$ Grid Ad Revenue Local Conf. Support Sections Chapters Council Short Courses TAB OEB SCV SF

Summary IEEE is a unique, highly-beneficial organization to the world and to you. Active local chapters (you!) are the of IEEE. Get involved in your Section; you can help each other. Know about your Council: –The Council is the geographic entity above Sections, but below Areas and Regions. –The Council is below Sections in terms of control and finances. –Your Council exists to help, never lord over, the Sections. Your Council coordinates tri-section activities, like this!
Get your motor running…have a great 2014! IEEE: Powerful & nothing foreign about it
Thanks to the 2012 SFBAC ExCom… San Francisco: 2012 Chair –2012 SF Chair: Shirin Tabatabai –2012 SF Rep: Dan Sparks/Shirin Santa Clara: 2012 Secretary –2012 SCV Chair: Brian Berg –2012 SCV Rep: Ed Aoki Oakland/East Bay: 2012 Treasurer –2012 OEB Chair: Bill DeHope –2012 OEB Rep: Brent McHale The right-hand rule of SFBAC positions OEB Treas. 18 What could a Council do? Provide a vehicle for services aided by section interaction –In the past, sponsor local conferences, shows Coordinate communications –The Grid magazine Host Tri-section Events –In the past, volunteer recognition –Yearly kickoffs Provide shared resources –in the past, an office & secretary Get too big for its breeches –Redirect section $ to Council
SFBACs checkered past… SFBAC was initially founded in the 1950s Along with LAC, we sponsored a trade show called Wescon Throughout the 1960s & 70s, Wescon was phenomenally successful and made lots of M$ The love of money became a root of much evil: –Council rented its own office space and hired a full-time secretary –Section rebates were directly-deposited to Councils account –Sections became subservient to Council In the 1990s, the Internet boomed & trade shows busted. Judgment Day cometh to Wescon, and to SFBAC. In 2005, Council was re-formed, clearly under its sections. Its MoU now limits its funds to a years budget. Excesses flow to the Sections.
What should a Council do?
