3. The Columbian Exchange
The global transfer of foods, plants, and animals during the colonization of Americas is known as the Columbian Exchange
Ships from Americas brought back items for Europeans, Asians and Africans
Ex: Tomatoes, squash, pineapples, tobacco, and cacao beans (chocolate)
Most important items were corn and potatoes (inexpensive & nutritious)
Europeans also introduced things to the Americas from Europe and Africa
Ex: horses, cattle, sheep, and pigs, bananas, black-eyed peas, yams, wheat, rice, barley, and oats 3

Columbian Exchange had tragic impact on Native Americans
In addition to bringing items to Americas, Europeans also brought diseases
Included smallpox, measles, influenza, typhus, malaria, and diphtheria
Resulted in death of millions of Native Americans
Establishment of colonial empires in the Americas influenced nations of Europe
New wealth coupled in growth of overseas trade
Led to new business and trade practices in Europe during 16 & 17 centuries
Changed economics in Europe
